This is the fatal flaw of that entire argument. Why separate the children from their parents in the first place? All the rest is just legal hand-waving to try to justify an immoral policy.

Taking it out of context and making it a standalone moral issue is the fatal flaw of your argument. If the parents, if they are even the real parents, have committed felonies then they should be separated.

his debunked argument that he had no authority to stop separations of undocumented immigrant families at the border.

Trump's climbdown came after he faced intense pressure from across the political spectrum and from religious, political and world leaders to halt the separations, which produced days of heart-rending news coverage of crying children some of whom were kept in cage-like detention centers.

Looks like even Trump disagrees with you now.

Funny how I didn't see the POTUS signing an executive order as one of the options in your article.

Established special interests have him cornered, gotta pick his battles.

Or maybe he realized just how wrong what they're doing is.

I'm willing to give Trump the benefit of doubt. He's not a career politician, and he's clearly not aware of the hidden agenda behind most moves.

The people I despise are those who do know better, yet vehemently defend their morally bankrupt position for their own self-interests. Trump instructed them to crack down on illegal immigration, and they decided to do that by inflicting horrible psychological trauma upon innocent children. A special place in hell indeed!

Indeed! For those parents, real or fake, and smugglers who choose to put these children through this odyssey knowing the risks, not just from any separation policy, and/or deliberately using the children for pity points.

A lot of those families are fleeing gang violence in South America.

I have to wonder, are you a parent?

I ask because I am a parent, and I cannot imagine any parent that would knowingly put their children through such an ordeal.

You brought up the point of "fake parents", but from the statistics of Kristjen Nielsen herself, they only found 300 such cases while over 2000 children are being detained. In other words, the vast majority of those detained children were traveling with their family.

It's not another country's responsibility if your neighborhood, hometown, or home country is a mess, shouldn't these people be fighting the good fight in their neighborhoods, home towns, or home countries?

It's also quite a leap to say that of all the places in between where they are from and the US they cannot find a safe enough haven. No?

If things are so bad all along the way then why did they choose to endanger themselves and their children, or even just their children, by taking the trip?

In many countries along the way as well as in the US these people can also legally apply for asylum in many supposedly safe countries including the US, yet they choose to enter the US illegally. That's a conscious choice because they think they can flout the law, jump the line, score a better economic life, and get away with it at the expense of US citizens and legal immigrants.

The US has the right to enforce its border, but there was absolutely no need to do so by forcibly separating children from their parents. The article you linked claimed that the only way to prevent that was to change the Flores law. This was demonstrated to be a lie shortly after when Trump signed an executive order to stop the practice.

Look, this is not about immigration. It's about basic human decency. Deport them or detain them, but keep the kids with their parents!
