It’s not quite the British invasion, but the largest ship ever built for the Royal Navy arrived in New York on Friday for a weeklong visit.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth, dubbed the “Big Liz,” anchored in the Hudson River carrying about 1,500 seamen and was viewed by tourists visiting the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island Ferry riders.
“I am delighted and proud to have brought HMS Queen Elizabeth into New York Harbor for the first time,” Royal Navy Capt. Jerry Kyd said in a statement.
“This visit is very symbolic of the intimate relationship the Royal Navy has with the US Navy and Marine Corps.”
The ship is 932 feet long and weighs more than 70,000 tons.
In addition to hosting several events on its visit to the Big Apple, the arrival of the aircraft carrier will give the Royal Navy personnel an opportunity to enjoy the city.
Some of the sailors could be seen taking selfies with the Manhattan skyline in the background as the ship rode into the Husdon.
Kyd said the ship portrayed “the future of the Royal Navy.”
“When the Prince of Wales joins this ship next year, this is a navy we can be really proud of,” he added.
“We are back on the world stage, we are back in power projection operations, and we are back in protecting your families, the British people at home and our interests around the world.”
British Defense Minister Gavin Williamson welcomed the ship’s arrival on Twitter, calling it “a symbol of our commitment to our #security and the security of our allies.”
“Her entry into New York harbor demonstrates that our Armed Forces are ready to stand by our #allies,” Williamson wrote.

When the RN was forced to withdraw from 'East of Suez' in the early 70s, there were suggestion thrown around that the amphibious ships (LPHs and LPDs) were no longer needed (the Fearless and Intrepid were not even ten years old at the time). The RN responded by grabbing hold of the 'NATO Northern Flank' role and holding on for dear life, also allocating the RM Commando force too, the idea being they would be used in WW3 to reinforce Norway at short notice and were far more efficient way to do this than requisitioned North Sea Car Ferries as some were suggesting.
In 1982, Car Ferries were indeed requisitioned for amphibious transport, but could only act as supplementary transports, not as primary assault ships. The LPDs and LPHs were still needed. Only one LPH was left in service, Hermes, but much to the disappointment of the head of the Commando force, she would not be available to him as she would be busy providing Air Defence and Strike to the fleet... what we really needed was a much bigger ship, large enough to do both jobs at the same time. That's the real Genesis of the QECs, conceptually replacing both Hermes and Bulwark in one hull! People complain they aren't like a Nimitz, well that's not what they were designed for!

The 'Captain's Barge' of Big Liz, is somewhat quicker than previous mounts; It's a Jaguar F Type! Special paint job too!

Today HMS Queen Elizabeth hosted the inaugural Atlantic Future Forum on Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence and a British and American Trade Day.
Events like this as well as others are a huge part of the ships role in projecting soft power where ever she sails. She will often welcome on board local dignitaries and business where ever she goes, proudly showing of the best of British and flying the flag of our nation.
Seems the jaguar on-board was put to good use as well.
