That just sounded like plain old corruption when I first heard about that shitshow. Its not like its an airliner where every kilogram of weight is costing you. Making toilets a bit heavier but cheaper is always an option on a freaking aircraft carrier.

You see composite kitchen sinks being installed in normal houses these days, so they're not actually that expensive.

They are far tougher and more durable than porcelain or metal sinks. S

As for carbon fibre, as long as they didn't spend too much extra money to buy them, it should work out cheaper in the long run, if they don't need replacing

Formica laminate isn't the same thing as carbon fiber composites. People use Formica in kitchens in the US because it is cheaper than stone. But carbon fiber composites are even more expensive than stainless steel.

To make carbon fibers requires the use of high temperatures and this one of the reasons why they are so expensive.

Do you have actual cost that they paid for a carbon fibre sink and what they *should* be paying?

Just the price of materials alone is quite indicative:

Formica is a plywood laminate. It is basically quite cheap to produce and the processes to make it use relatively low temperature processes. Maybe boiling water temperature i.e. 100 degrees Celsius to produce.

Carbon fibers need to be produced at 1000 degrees Celsius. And like half the fibers you produce get rejected. They might be too short or too brittle.

It’s not cost that matters. Sinks on battleships must be battle grade & not sink. This design criteria will save lives when the ship sinks so Cost is not an issue. Lives matter.
