LOL I would love to hear those 'encouraging' words MCPO Whitlock is giving to those shipmates. Somehow I don't think it's along the lines of 'oh Timmy you can do it.. just try a lil harder. I have faith in you son.. Your mom is going to be real proud of you'.

LOL! He looks like the kinda MCPO that when you see him coming all of a sudden you see nothing but "a-holes and elbows"..as we use to say.

I'm happy that I served with men such as MCPO Whitlock. Real happy.

Recently Nimitz , an west coast CVN, transited the Suez canal and has been operating in the Mediterranean. This past weekend they made a port call in Naples Italy. I read about it on facebook since the Navy did not post any info about the port visit. Well today the USN posted photos of sailors going on liberty in Naples. I was surprised. Honestly. Usually when a ship is in port the USN only post goodie two shoes pictures of sailors doing community service projects such as painting schools , playing with kids etc..

Nimitz was last in Naples in 1982..

I don't get this at all. Why doesn't the USN just by boots off the shelf??

Because the Navy wants to get a special boot, made for the salt water/ocean-going environment that meets all of their specs.

Now, it is definitely true that off the shelf boots are already made for the commerical fishing business that are made for saltwater environments and for safety (steel toed) and long life. Redwing, Wolverine, Keen, Danner, Muck, etc. all make excellent commerical grade, industry safety standard boots that very well could meet most, if not all of the US Navy's need.

Such boots that are steel or composite toed, electrically protected, great outside grip, saltwater proof, etc, will run around $200 per pair in the 6 or 8 inch tall variety. It would be interesting to see how that compares to the price of the US Navy boots.

I love this photo of an aircrew pouring over their helo. Bring back any memories Popeye the sailor man?

The AEGIS destroyers are among the most squared away, fit, good looking...and capable destroyers ever built IMHO.

Particluarly the Flight IIa with their full helo facilities for two SH-60s. It will be good to see the Flight III vessels, but the US has an entire fleet of these ships for providing multiple escorts to every carrier or amphibious taks group, and plenty more for SAGs and individual missions.

And to think the USN has about 60 of these ships in service.

Oh yes many years ago I was assigned to HSL-31 from October '77 to November '80. And I was assigned to HC-11 from March of '83 to March of '85. I was on shore duty in both squadrons. Seems so long ago.

One of my best memories is during Christmas 1983 HC-11 had a Christmas party for dependent children. The highlight was that Santa Claus arrived via one of HC-11 own CH-46 and was lowered to the flight line by the rescue hoist. And he left the same way. Kids loved it!
