Here is another aspect of China rising---in video games.
I have never heard of this game before, but this, and another game called the Journey to the West, have managed a feat only World of Warcraft had previously done---to have over one million playing members.
Obviously its an MMO, which means hour grinding, real life sucking massive multiplayer RPG.
I never found the site for this yet, but Asian MMOs can be assuringly a few things.
- Highly steeped in Asian and Chinese mythology.
- Well steeped into highly competitive PvP and PK.
I also found out an interesting financial model. Unlike the traditional pay system, which is a monthly subscription, the game itself is free, but downloads to add new weapons, items and armor, are not. This means that items have a real life currency value in addition to a cyber monetary value, quite a difference from Western MMOs, which try to discourage out of game, RL trading of cyberitems (Ebay has now cancelled all trade related to MMO items).
The next thing I heard now is that this game, since last month, is now moving into other Asian markets like Malaysia and Taiwan.
