I remember this type some time ago as a prototype with its characteristic modified rear-engine cover and new nose, but what's its designation??

First of all, Chinese helicopter have been on the backburner probably until 2008, but even after the Sichuan earthquake the influx of government investments, they first need to introduce major modernised / upgraded model to warrent the production. And on top of that, major investments and upgrade on the entire R&D as well as production facilities have to be in place too.
Now, as you should aware, those newer models only finished their flight testing somewhere inside the last 12 months, and in that period, Z-20 also passed that milestone, so probably they first need to jockey the production numbers of all those models (assuming Z-8G and Z-20 compliment each other) before putting the foot down...
