Z-20 (all variants) thread

It's not a Glamour project.
J20 is a Glamour Project, China's stealth fighter,
Y20 is a Glamour Project a Transport the size of which that has only been equaled previously by the US and Russia.
Z20 by contrast is in a class of chopper that most countries with helicopter makers can build. H60, Ka60, KUH-1, Bell 525, AW149, NH90 you also have the rise of newer rotary wing platforms in development The V280 Valor, AW609, V22, Tiltrotors, coaxials with pushers. which for an aggressively modernizing Army that wants to sit on the Razors edge of tech is where the Z20 kinda falls to lack luster. The Practical need comes in here though and the Command has to say, "We need this more today, and can catch up latter".
And if you note they are not actively preventing leaks, It's not a Black Project just not a Sexy one.
What is happening though is where the cameras are swarming J20 like paparazzi On a Hollywood starlet in a Bikini.
And Y20 is being shown on the Red Carpet like Robert Downey Jr. at the opening of the next Avengers movie.
Z20 is the Indy movie that only gets seen by those in the know willing to travel to that one Independent Theater hours away. It's not that it's not in the open.
It's just not being promoted.

That's a...strange way to compare, to say the least. Nevertheless, more or less on the point.

The Y-20 project was never hidden, it got elevated to become one of those "5-year plan" projects, hit the frontpage about the same time as C919; J-20 got no "official recognition" for 5 years until Zhuhai Airshow 2016, during that time a rather successful PR campaign played itself out - remember, back then the MiG-21 bloodline J-7 series was still the "poster boy" and J-10 had yet replace the J-7 in enough numbers. Plus, J-20's CAC test flight homebase is surrounded by civilan housing, so J-20 is easily spotted.

Z-20 is...well, we know they've been at it since 1990s, but helicopters has always shoved to secondary-tier priority due to various realities forcing China to pursue other projects first. Besides, its test flight homebase is said to be quite out of the way, and spotting reports only came out during the test flight phase when the Z-20 shuttled to various climate zone across China.

Whenever the Z-20 is ready they are going to need to churn them out in numbers just for the PLA. Engine upgrades to existing Z-10's or new builds with more powerful engines are also going to be needed in numbers pronto just for the PLA. They will have to mass produce at a rate like they have never done before with helicopters if they want to quickly meet their own needs as well as those of exports.
Whichever way it'd be, the domestic demand is more than enough to fully occupy the production capabilities all the way to 2020s if not beyond. Don't expect FMS until after PLA / PLAN made overseas deployments with Z-20, utilizing them in actual actions outside China borders, not necessary in combat ops, for I'm certain that there will be plenty opportunity for humanitarian aid actions, y'know, Indonesia or Philippines could suffer at least one nasty quake in the coming decade or so....

My guess that PLA may just want a small number Z-20 (perhaps 10-15) to test and to verify a lot of things .. and will be mass produced in 2-3 years time to make sure everything is fine. You know there will always be some hiccups/bugs for new type or new design
They've been running test flights since 23 December 2013, and if high-res pics now become available, it's very likely that things are now move onto service trials or even lead-in training, building up cadre of Z-20 certified pilots and supporting ground crew manpower base.

I hope Type 055 carries either 2 x Z15 o2 xr Z-20

They can build a 12,000 ton monster and not have the ASW choppers in place ???

Naval versions please not interested in army aviation !!

New online photos of China's Z-20 10-ton utility helicopter have sparked heated discussion on the Internet. Let’s take a look at the new helicopter.

The Z-20 is the informal name of a medium-lift (9-10 tons) utility helicopter (similar to the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk) developed independently by China. The official name of this helicopter will be announced when it is commissioned.

In recent years, a large number of Z-10, Z-19 and other armed helicopters have joined the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), making up for China's lack of reconnaissance and attack helicopters.

However, China has been lacking a 10-ton general tactical helicopter to carry out assault transport, airlift and logistic support tasks. Although China has the large military transport aircraft Y-20, it is more suitable for remote transport and delivery tasks. Short-range transport and assault operations still need a general helicopter like the Z-20.

China acquired 24 US Black Hawk helicopters in the 1980s. These helicopters helped China fully understand the leading aviation technology of the US. The Black Hawk’s flight performance, material technology and reliability were much higher than those of China’s homegrown helicopters at that time.

In the 1980s, it was said that the Black Hawk was the only helicopter in China that could be used in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Black Hawk played a huge role in many remote areas of China. As late as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, eighteen UH-60 Black Hawks were dispatched to conduct rescue operations, although these helicopters had been in high-load service for many years.

China once considered copying the Black Hawk when it was first introduced to China. Although the model was only the civil export model, the technology was something beyond China’s reach at that time. For example, the manufacturing process of large-size titanium parts used in Black Hawk couldn’t be found in Chine even in the 1990s.

Although the Black Hawk was a product of the 1970s, China was not able to come up with a similar product even in the early 21st century. As it is with most models, the learning process from the Black Hawk was a very difficult process requiring countless accumulation in materials, workmanship, processing and research and development, as well as 20 years of running-in and an experienced team.

The arduous course of the development of the Chinese helicopter industry has actually been a painful process that countries with less developed aviation industries must go through.

The Z-20 medium-lift utility helicopter is said to be in the late stage of development. It is expected that in the near future, the final design work of the Z-20 will be completed and the helicopter will soon join the PLA Army and Navy service.

In the foreseeable future, the combination of the Y-20 transport aircraft and Z-20 utility helicopter will effectively link the strategic and tactical transport in the PLA.

Yes, but I think we must admit that we are a very small circle of peoples, who know this bird already, who follow it since years with special interest whereas in the mainstream-media I'm sure not few will be surprised to learn that such a type is under development in China or close to enter service ... and even more will surely again cry "the Chinese are once again copying only"!

Could it be that this is no longer a prototype?? .. maybe already a first serial airframe since it does not look photshopped.
