A camerman who attended the AC352's flirst flight found this cutout decoration at Harbin Aircraft Industry (Group), and apparently the PLA has picked a nickname for the Z-20, "入雲龍" ("Dragon in the Clouds" aka "Gongsun Sheng"), in line with the tradition (since Z-10 enter service) of naming helicopter after characters in the classic tale "Shui Hu Zhuan ".

What is happening to the Z-20. They have been testing that helicopter for more than 3 years now. When will the production start ? We are talking about a utilities helicopter here not a fighter jet or a attack helicopter.

Z-20 as a project first came to known in public in 2006, its first flight was in 2013, and how soon it move from prototype stage to production stage has a lot to do with how much priority the project gets - Z-8 has been in more of a limbo for decades, just enough to keep the manufactorum from going under but nothing more, some thought with the introduction of Mi-17 in quanities would spell the end of Z-8 but instead of going domestic production with Mi-17, Z-8 gets a major modernisation effort and reborn as Z-16.

We've been expecting the Z-15 taking the baton from Z-9, which is too big for light helo but too small for medium utility class, but it's first flight was 7 years behind the H175 (Airbus-built) version and 3 behind Z-20's, if not also losing the "Z" prefix (mark of military affiliation) and use the AC352 instead.

Given the Z-20 ain't exactly technologically ground-breaking (alas, it could finally bust open a door that the PLA has a first glimpse since the first S-70 came to China), they might actually starts LRIP this year, in order to introduce an IOC-certified squadron in 2019, just in time for the national day parade.

AC 352 will be deliver to the first customer next year. It is a medium helicopter 7 ton bigger than 4 ton Z9 but way smaller than 13 ton H-18 And it has the same engine rating as NH101
It is specially design for Sea environment and met the Sea stage 6. It has tricyle landing gear freeing the bottom of the helicopter for big search radar installation. Her sister product Y12 also start as civilian plane but now inducted into the both Air force and Navy by replacing the engine with WZ6

According to Chinese media, Avicopter is planning on delivering the first AC352 in 2018. At China Helicopter Expo in Tianjin in 2015, the company announced oil-and-gas operator Citic Offshore Helicopter is the launch customer.

It was 7 years behind H175 because Avicopter want to have WZ16 engine running on AC 352(Z15). If it intended for purely civilian helicopter it will be power by Pratt PT6 C 67E and be ready in 2009
H175 is already certified by EASA and it is identical to AC352(Z15). It has met all the required test.

The main difference is the engine, as Safran Helicopter Engines is providing a pair of Ardiden 3Cs in lieu of Pratt & Whitney PT6C-67Es. The Ardiden 3C is understood to be rated at approximately 1,800 shaft horsepower (shp), slightly more than the 1,775-shp PT6C-67E. Safran claims its turboshaft burns 10 percent less fuel than its competitor.

The Ardiden 3C is also known as the WZ16, as it has been jointly developed by Safran Helicopter Engines, CAPI and Dongan, parts of the new Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC) consortium. Safran defined the engine’s architecture, while Dongan has developed the compressor and various parts, a Safran expert explained to Vertical. The engine partnership is both about development and production.

Ohhh, J-20 needed only 6 years, so there is hope.

Actually there are already reports about LRIP, but given a maiden flight only in 2013 I would not hold my breath until 2018/19.
My guess is the Copyhawk copied as much as Chinese engineers possibly can from the Blackhawk, that's why it'll fly sooner than the J-20.
