A photographer captured the startling moment a great white shark burst out of the water opening its jaws just feet away from a cameraman. Australian filmmaker Dave Riggs snapped the dramatic image off the coast of Port Lincoln, Australia, while he was filming for Discovery Channel's Shark Week. The shark, almost 15ft in length, appeared for the once-in-a-lifetime shot after Dave had dipped his other camera into the water. Although the image appears aggressive - the shark, jaws wide open, has scratches and blood across its face - Dave said she was simply checking out the surroundings.

Taronga Zoo vet Frances Hulst has released endangered green sea turtle Alice back into the ocean off North Head in Sydney, New South Wales. Alice was treated by zoo staff after she was found entangled in fishing line near Port Stephens in January. After having the line cut from her flipper and feet at a local animal hospital, X-rays revealed several fishing hooks, including one in her throat. Alice was then sent to Taronga, where the hook was removed, and vets nursed her back to health.

'I'm singin' in the rain': A crafty squirrel looks prepared for the British weather - crouching beneath an umbrella to keep dry. The cute critter appeared to be taking shelter during a downpour last week by holding the mini brolly above its head. Kind-hearted photographer Max Ellis, 52, set up the hilarious scene during a recent shower to give the squirrels a brief break from the rain. He tempted them in by hanging the toy on stealth fishing line in his garden in Teddington, south west London, before coating it in sunflower seeds and peanut butter.
