All I know is Uraguay should have been kicked from the tournament for that flagrant handball that robbed the only African team left from making a final four appearance. Shame on Uraguay.

FIFA still don't have a rule against such clear cut violation? Hmm..., if so, are we going to witness 5 goalkeepers in front of the goal post in the next world cup? :D

That will only happen if the defenders are scrambling in the absolute last minute of the game AND the two sides are tied. Otherwise, getting a penalty kick and getting a player sent off early in the game will most likely mean that team's gonna lose.

most people who hate uruguay focuses on how ghana was the only african team left in the tournament and no african team has ever gone to semi-finals, and make it sounds like a big deal. Well, it's not. there are many other teams that have never gone to the semis, no north american team has gone there, no oceania team has gone there. Why would the africans get preferred treatment? Uruguay got their punishment: a red card, a penalty kick, and a missed game for Suarez. Ghana had more than enough chances to win the game, in fact, their captain didn't even look like he wanted to score in the penalty shootout.

In rugby if a cynical foul is committed to prevent an obvious try from being scored, then a penalty try is awarded, the same should be done in soccer if the hand is used to keep the ball from entering the net, with the current penalty rules still applying for the different infringements in the penalty area.

I think a penalty is poor compensation for a prevented definite goal by using the hand by a player other than the goalie to keep it out, as theres no gaurantee, that the shot will find the back of the net, and that puts a added strain on the penalty taker. I dont think anyone would have wanted to be in his shoes.

where did all these clowns come from. suarez took it for the team, and willingly accepted the consequences which he knew was coming beforehand. so it was a good play.

That's basically what I meant. That, under such a situation, we are going to see more cases of players openingly handling the ball. It won't be a beautiful and fair game anymore if players were to routinely resort to such dire measures under similar situations. IMO, under such clear cut violation, FIFA should have a rule to have the goal allowed.

Suarez was smart in playing to the rules, by using his hands , he gave his team a slight chance, but it doesnt make it good soccer.

AS i suggested in my previous post awarding a penalty goal will prevent the use of hands under similar situations.

Maybe FIFA's right by not using moderning technology to help the ref, as controversy over human error is part of the game.

So, do you call this Hand of Satan? :nono:

I supposed this thread is dead after the end of the World Cup 2010; however, it manage to survive. Hope there will be more topic to talk about in the coming Women's World Cup next year. Oh, the event will be in Germany in case you don't know.

Id only be interested if the Chinese women teams in it. Anyone know how the Chinese women teams doing internationally these days. They were quite good a few years ago, but it seems they have dropped away.
