I can agree on some of the point that she has mentioned but not all of them are correct

On traditional China:
Nothing really to disagree here, what she described pretty much applies to most women. They could be power hungry also, like or just as deadly as men when given the opportunity. Tangs Empress and Qing Empress are an example

On revolutionary China:
She is correct on most point in regarding on promoting "heroic mother" to give birth to a lot of children, but from what I heard or understand, this happened mostly in the rural area. People in the city have been having a lower birth rate. When the one child policy came around, it mostly target women to get abortion, which could damage the women's health, but they also arrest the husband and force them to go under a procedure to become infertile. In regarding to the Unisex clothing, either the author doesn't understand Mao's ideal or she is out of touch with the situation. During this time, all form of religion, artistic work and scholarly work are suppressed. Everyone one have to be "equal". For the one child policy, tradition has more to do than the system, cause preferential on male babies.

On Modern China:
I want to re-iterate a point. Migrating from rural to urban area is not illegal. You just don't have the the same "national account" (kind of like citizenship of residency) if you just move there to work. You can apply to change your account from farmer to worker. There is a trade off though depending which province you are at (you could be better with a farmer account). Women did not loose advantage when "equal work under communism" is gone. Able women actively sought employment and opportunity. The part that she said where if the female is the only child in the family, she will be showered with all the family resources to get top notch education. This is not always the case and it can also apply to males. Not too sure what she was implying here. Marriage does not require the unit approval, I think she meant having the marriage registered legally just like marriage in the western world. In China, a unit can be the same meaning as a department. The social benefits again depends on the national account that one residence have (I think this only applies to people born before the opening up of China). Currently they have to pay taxes or social insurance for the benefits. Health on the other hand depends if you are a farmer or a worker account.

It is always a tradition from all culture that Women takes care of the children. With the opening up of economy and gender equality, women have more chances to succeed in the workplace or the marketplace. Roles are currently changing depending on which member of the household makes more money.

On a side not, I remember reading somewhere that China has a lot of female bosses and entrepreneur .
