Social media posts that a newly wed couple employed by the Nanchang Railway Bureau transcribed the Constitution of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on their wedding night have shed light on an ongoing nationwide education campaign among Party members.

Two employees of the rail bureau of Nanchang in East China's Jiangxi Province copied the CPC Constitution on their wedding night "to create a wonderful memory," read an article posted Monday on the bureau's WeChat account.

The article said that Monday was the 20th day of a campaign entitled "Copy the CPC Constitution for 100 days." The post also displayed many other employees' transcriptions.

Many other State-owned enterprises and governmental agencies across China have launched similarly themed activities to encourage Party members to transcribe the Constitution and have displayed the copies online.

The leading Party committee of China Telecom's Inner Mongolia branch asked all Party members in the company to copy at least 500 words of the Constitution every day for six months beginning on April 1, according to news site people.com.cn.

A WeChat account named "Learn from President Xi Jinping" affiliated to the People's Daily Overseas Edition also launched a 100-day activity, in which it has displayed copies of the Constitution transcribed by Party members from all over the country every day since March 1.

In a document issued on February 28, the General Office of the CPC Central Committee announced the launch of a national education campaign focusing on the study of the Constitution, Party rules and Xi's speeches.

The document required Party committees at all levels to implement the education campaign, guiding members to abide by Party rules and encouraging them to act in accordance with CPC Central Committee policies and guidelines.

The document said the campaign should target Party members with wavering confidence in communism and socialism with Chinese characteristics, as well as those who advocate Western values, violate Party rules, work inefficiently or behave unethically, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

CEDAR RAPIDS — If one were to make a list of worst places to commit a burglary, a police department parking lot would probably be near the top of the list.

That didn’t stop one Cedar Rapids man, however.

According to the Linn County Attorney’s Office, 27-year-old Alex M. Thompson climbed the fence at the Cedar Rapids Police Department around 3:53 a.m. Thursday. Thompson then got into the personal vehicle of a Cedar Rapids Police Officer.

Authorities said Thompson had taken several items out of the glove box of the car at the time he was caught. Thompson was arrested and has been charged with third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison; and criminal trespass, a simple misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail.

Thompson has an extensive criminal history in Linn County, with convictions for conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of a controlled substance, drunken driving and criminal mischief, among other offenses.

Even in HK where protesting about inane things is a near daily occurrence, this has got to be a new level.
‘Nintendo is disregarding our distinctiveness’: Protesters rail against maker of Pokemon over Chinese name of Pikachu

Localists have taken their defence of Hong Kong identity and values to a new front, and into a battle with a global tech giant over the name of one of Asia’s biggest popular culture icons.

The source of their anger is Pikachu – the yellow mascot of the Pokemon gaming franchise – and the translation of its Chinese name.

Japanese video game maker Nintendo touched a nerve with localists earlier this year by announcing it would use the Putonghua pinyin version for over a hundred Pokemon in the Hong Kong version of an upcoming game.

Those names are rendered into different Chinese characters in Hong Kong and the mainland, to get the closest approximation to the Japanese original when the characters are read by Cantonese and Putonghua speakers.

So the plan is for Beikaaciu, the Cantonese name of Pikachu, to be replaced by the pinyin version, Pikaqiu.

Over a dozen protesters and Pokemon fans marched against the decision on Monday, calling on Nintendo to reinstate the Cantonese name.

“We don’t want Pikaqiu! Bring back Beikaaciu! Respect Cantonese! Follow local traditions!” the protesters chanted as they marched from Chater Garden to the Japanese consulate in Central.

Sing Leung, chief editor of Lonely Media and a co-organiser of the rally, said: “We have been using Beikaaciu for over 20 years... this is a part of our way of life and the Cantonese translation also underlines the distinctiveness of our language.”
Leung noted that over 6,000 people signed an online petition in March urging the company to reverse its decision. But their request was ignored.

“This is not only a commercial decision, but relates to cultural exchanges [between Hong Kong and Japan]. We want to let the Japanese consulate know that a company from their country is disrespecting Hongkongers,” Leung said, warning that they may call for a public boycott of Nintendo products if the company does not listen to their demand.

The controversy comes amid growing concerns that the unique identity and language of Hong Kong is gradually being eroded.

In February, an Education Bureau proposal which emphasised learning Putonghua and simplified Chinese characters, used on the mainland, in local schools

. The Communications Authority got around 10,000 complaints against the broadcaster.

“It would be very hard for us to identify with the products if they change a name that’s been used for such a long time,” a protester surnamed Lam said, while pointing out that Gundam, another Japanese anime franchise, had maintained Cantonese names.

“If [Nintendo] doesn’t take any action after this protest, then I will stop buying Pokemon products,” he said.

Kenny Chu, another protester, said: “Beikaaciu is part of Hongkongers’ collective memory. Nintendo is disregarding our distinctiveness. We need to protect this part of our culture.”

It's news of the Weird as it seems like a why bother, yet it's news as part of the continuing tensions between Hong Kong's special status as the jewel of Pacific trade and economics as a free port of asia vs Hong Kong as a Subject of the People's Republic of China.
At it's most Basic Nintendo, did not bother to make a Cantonese version of the next series of Pokemon.

This is causing a back lash mostly because of the existing tensions in Hong Kong where there is a continuing fear of a Mainlandization including Mandarin-ization.
Some might remember a movie that caused some controversy lately called "10 Years". The movie is basically an expression of the Fear of loosing the unique culture of Hong Kong. Part of the Film's major hits was that as part of the plot the PRC had banned public use of Cantonese.
So by skipping Cantonese Nintendo trip lined local worries and fears that the PRC may begin pushing policies and encouraging private foreign entities ( like Nintendo) to skip Canton as It they produced such It would possibly face retribution.
If there Were such policies enacted it would push Hong Kong culture more and more fringe and eventually lead to the possible extermination of Hong Kong culture and independent identity.
By forcing Hong Kong into line with the rest of the PRC.
The old line was "One country, two systems" more and more however we are seeing the break down of that.
