They can try carbon dating the artifact, the wood handle specifically. They made a big fuss over the artifact but didn't border to try carbon dating.

Without an estimated age to the artifact, then they are just making stuff up. I would be very curious to know the approximate age of it. “If” it did turn out to be very old, it would make for a very interesting story indeed.

I think it is just some worker's hammer from a couple centuries ago that got buried in floating sediment which then hardened. Maybe some chemical interaction within the sediment aged the wood faster but being trapped inside the rock also slowed down the iron rusting.

It could be exactly as you say. However it is not as much fun as rampant speculation about an alternate history to humanity.
