Japan and the United States will hold their biggest ever joint military drills just days after a US and South Korean show of force amid tensions on the Korean peninsula, officials said Thursday.

The previously announced "Keen Sword" drills, which were planned before North Korea's artillery barrage of a South Korean island last week, will take place from Friday to December 10, a US military official confirmed.

"Keen Sword will cap the 50th anniversary of the Japan-US alliance as an 'alliance of equals'," Major William Vause, chief of operational plans, training and exercises said in a statement.

"It is the largest bilateral exercise between the United States and Japan military forces."

To demonstrate solidarity with Seoul, the Pacific allies will for the first time invite South Korean military officers to observe the drills, Japanese officials said.

"It turns out to be good timing to show the bond between Japan and the United States," a senior Japanese defence ministry official told the Yomiuri Shimbun daily, with the drill following US-South Korea exercises that ended Wednesday.

Around 34,000 Japanese military personnel with 40 warships and 250 aircraft will join more than 10,000 US counterparts with 20 warships and 150 aircraft in the drill in Japanese waters off its southern islands, close to the southern coast of South Korea.

Training events include integrated air and missile defence, base security, close air support, live-fire training, maritime defence and search and rescue.

By having South Korean military officers observe the Japan-US exercises, Tokyo hopes to demonstrate solidarity among the three countries at a time of high tension in the region.

What should China do..? Nothing!. Russia will do it. Russian's jets halted the "Keen Swords" drill. US still afraid of Russia

Russian jets halted US-Japan military drills Japan-US war games were the biggest ever held by the two nations Continue reading the main story

The US and Japan were forced to halt military exercises this week because of Russian jets flying nearby, Japanese officials have revealed.

Russia admitted its jets were flying above the Sea of Japan, but said the pilots had not breached any rules.

Moscow and Tokyo have argued recently over an island chain they both claim.

The US-Japan war games are the biggest ever held between the two countries, involving more than 44,000 personnel and 60 warships.

The drills - codenamed Keen Sword - are being held to mark the 50th anniversary of the US-Japan alliance.

Japanese government spokesman Yoshito Sengoku said the incident with the Russian jets took place on Monday.

"It is a fact that as part of the continuing Japan-US joint exercises, there was training taking place in the Sea of Japan on the sixth of this month," he said.

"It is also a fact that fighter jets were launched after Russian planes were detected over the Sea of Japan near Japan's Noto peninsula."

Roman Markov, a Russian military spokesman, said the jets were flying within their "zone of responsibility".

"The aircraft carried out a planned flight in an area of the Russian Pacific Fleet's regular activity," he said.

"Our pilots did not violate any rules of international airspace."

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sparked a diplomatic row with Japan earlier this year by visiting the Southern Kurils, which Japan calls the Northern Territories.

The islands, off the north coast of Japan's Hokkaido island, were seized by Soviet troops at the end of World War II, but Japan still regards them as part of its territory.

pleeze..the US is not afraid of Russia..at all. Never has been.. I was involved in the Cold war mate. Trust me on this.

The Russians were probably interfering with the drill in some form. Just like in the Cold War days. The drill,by the way, still goes on.

By the way Keen Sword is held annually. So this is nothing new.

Maybe if Russia sent Putin to slap the crazy off the Kim's genetic code.

Seriously, China should keep PyongYang on a short leash. Tell the Crazies on the other side of the river to hold their fire or they will drop the support.

Wikileaks already showed China "Does not Like" Kim's or North Korea's role in the world.

I think the drill should be done south of south korea. It's like showing off and firing your guns on a crazy neighbors backyard. You dont know what they'll do.

What's the point of doing anything? Let Japan and the US hold their drill. China wouldn't like it if someone tried to interfere or criticise its drills, so it should show the sort of respect it would want. Not that China really could do anything to interfere anyway.

They weren't jets, they were Il-38 maritime patrol aircraft

The media just likes to call every military aircraft a 'jet' nowadays:rolleyes:

People criticize China's maritime drills all the (friggin) time!

Whenever they hold exercises the media says somethign along the lines of "Oh China's stirring up trouble again," and some high ranking US official or commander expresses sadness/wariness.
The difference is that china's obviously holding drills because they're preparing to invade anyone within a five thousand kilometer radius and whenever other nations do it, it's to secure the peace or deter "belligerent" (or some other word synonymous to that) states, or retain the "balance of power".

Meanwhile other countries constantly hold their exercises which are too many for me to count... you know, ones like RIMPAC, Cobra Gold or whatever it's called, etc etc. And these barely get any mention at all... :(

And if the PLA felt it needed to "intefere" with these exercises I'm sure they could do a fly past with one of their few maritime patrol craft or send a flight of flankers or J-10s on patrol. Or maybe dispatch a submarine to surface within torpedo distance of a USN supercarrier :O
I personally feel that the PLAN may've sent a submarine to at least observe these exercises this time. Too good an opportunity to miss.

Yea that's what they did with the Kitty Hawk a few years ago. That thread got very heated and it was closed.

China needs to watch the USN and JMSDF work in unison..because the PLAN cannot do what the USN & JMSDF team can do. Fact.
