I think there will be

11 CVN
12 LHD/LHA(R)
12 LSD
12 LPD
22 tico
62 burke
14 SSBN
4 SSGN
46 SSN
60 LCS

This is only 255. Maybe add 8-10 DDX, ~20 perry? What are the other ships? Do minesweepers and logistic ships count?

Thanks.

Well, the actual numbers end up looking like this (but it is a moving target depending on the DDX, CGX, LCS, etc.) This is the latest thinking without any official impact from the CGX or LCS yet.:

I have the detail by class...but this is what it adds up to. All open, free information on the web.

Mine warfare vessels and auxiliaries do count, along with all classes of warships. It is esentially all commissioned US vessels. What don't count are vessels in the Military Sealift Command and such, and service craft and vessels, except for the Self Defense Test Ship.

Thanks for that. You have just answered the question I was about to ask! ;)

Cheers

You'll have to look it up on the net. There are many articles about it.

Global Security has good info (though some of it is outdated) on each class, current and future.

Interestingly, this particular idea was put forward by the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) at the time, Admiral Michael Mullins. He has just been nominated as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. My guess is that his planning will go forward.

That table says FFG will vanish. With LCS coming only, it probably will be ok.
But it also says 0 SSGNs from 2028 onwards. Will those come back with the new SSBN design that has to come sometime?
I think SSGNs are well worth having in the future.

Right now, I know of no plan for future SSGNs. They only exist now in the US because of treaty reductions and the conversion of Ohio SSBNs. I guess the thinking is that we will have ample Cruise missiles and other long range projections in the SSNs and the DDGs and CGs.

Veginia SSN has 12 tubes for cruiser missiles as well as 4 torpedo tubes that can launch cruiser missiles. Maybe the SDB is the future and will be integrated into SSNs.

Thanks. Actually the promotion of Admiral Mullen caused my question here.
