P-8A/P-8I ASW/MPA Aircraft Thread

Something don't look right how big is the cockpit of the Japanese aircraft,? It looks so massive how large are those windscreens looks like a 5 star hotel ??

P-8 front end looks tiny compared to Japanese aircraft front end??

Is a photo effect ??

That is the difference of a MPA dedicated design and an airframe that had been modified from a commercial airliner.
It alll has to do with the height in which the planes will be operating.
The P-8 will be flying mostly at around 7~8000 meters so there is no use in having a large window for visual confirmation where as the P-1 was design to do patrol at lower altitudes.
With operation plans to fly high they maintained the glass surface to a minimum since glass needs to be more thick then aluminum to maintain structural integrity adding overall weight to the plane. Same with the difference in length of the nose cone. The P-8 is utilizing the original design of the 737 so they can use the same nose cone to minimize production cost.

Pelicans-Strengthen-Bonds-with-Philippine-Forces.jpg

Naval Today said:
The Pelicans of Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 hosted members of the Philippine air force and navy aboard a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon for a familiarization flight to increase understanding and showcase the capabilities of the Navy’s newest maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft during a detachment to Clark Air Base, Republic of the Philippines, Feb. 17.

The flight was a bilateral patrol mission in airspace off of Luzon Island and allowed the U.S. Navy air crew to demonstrate the P-8A’s capabilities in both the littoral and open ocean environment and the flight characteristics of the P-8A in both high altitude reconnaissance missions and low altitude patrol regimes. The air crew also explained the operation of the aircraft’s multi-mission sensors.

During the three-week detachment, Feb. 1 to Feb. 21, VP-45 executed more than 180 flight hours in support of U.S. 7th Fleet objectives to strengthen maritime partnerships in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

The P-8A is the most advanced long range anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare aircraft in the world. A true multi-mission aircraft, it also provides superior maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capability. Built on the proven Boeing 737 airframe, the transition to P-8A brings with it enhanced safety and reduced maintenance. The P-8 is significantly quieter than the P-3, requires less maintenance, and provides more on-station time.

The new P-8A is part of the Navy’s commitment to the Pacific rebalance, bringing latest technology to 7th Fleet to ensure the U.S. is best postured to honor its commitment to regional security and stability.

Boeing delivered the 21st P-8A to the US Navy in December 2014. Three full US Navy Patrol squadrons have now been transitioned to the P-8A and a fourth is in process.

I believe in 2015 there will be twelve P-8As built, eight for the US Navy and 4 for Australia.

That will being the US Navy Inventory to 29 aircraft.

Then 15 more in 2016, 13 more in 2017, 13 more in 2018 for the US Navy is I believe rounds out the schedule for the next four years.

Now, the P-8I Neptune, which is the Indian Navy version, has had six of the eight aircraft delivered as of end of 2014. Two more will be delivered in 2015. This will make a total of 14 P-8s built and delivered in 2015 if Boeing meets its commitment...and it has been beating its production commitments thus far.

It is likely that India will buy at least four more P-8Is after the eight are delivered.

This is an amazing video.

Whatever you may think of such a mission...where else could we get such views of the ongoing work there, and the US assets monitoring it?

I am surprised that they were allowed aboard and to post videos of this detail. Analysts will have a field day with this info. Typical of this administration's misadventures IMHO.

Just the same, I would urge everyone to watch this:

Seeing this reclamation effort from these surveillance videos is awesome. Seeing the inside of the Poseidon like this is awesome (if crazy), hearing the Chinese controllers warning the aircraft...seeing the structures going up on Fiery Cross and Mischief Reef.

Simply amazing.

Well, it is clear that the US strategy is to use its assets (Principally P-8A Posiedon aircraft and US Navy vessels) to monitor, keep track of, and report on Chinese activities in the SCS.

That is not surprising.

More pictures from these aircraft are appearing now, showing Chinese submarines and surface vessels in the South China Sea. Hardly any surprises there...but nice pics just the same:

Whether this effort to reveal the full effort by the Chinese and seek to associate military activities with it is going to have any real impact remains to be seen.

I believe as so long at the PRC continues its reclamation efforts...and then improvements and building efforts on the resulting islands...and then does not place any truly offensive or game changing weapons systems on the island, that it will all simply be the US documenting what the Chinese are doing.

Otherwise, there is very little the US and others can do about it, and the only real way to counter it is to help other nations try and match the PRC effort.

As I have said numerous times...I do not expect this US Administration to either make an attempt to do that...or to have the influence and leadership skills to make it happen if they did.

In the mean time we can enjoy the pictures...listen to the rhetoric...and sit back and see what happens. The P-8A is certainly getting exercised however, and that will be good as it continues to be introduced by the US Navy around the world.
