    @bd popeye @Air Force Brat @Obi Wan Russell @Jura @asif iqbal @siegecrossbow @duncanidaho @Deino @Equation Well, they are a ways out yet...but this is the first step.

    They will be exceptionally quiet...even more so than the Ohios. Which is why they cost so much. 12 boats with 16 tubes for Trident II D5s first, then the new missiles late in the 2020s.

    Yes, it is a reduction...but it will be more than enough. These subs have a much longer maintenance period so they will be able to be out there in numbers, possibly eight at a time if needed, to do their work of feterence.

    Does the Air Force Really Need 74 Additional Combat Squadrons?

    [IMG]

    >>On Sep. 17, 2018 U.S. Air Force (USAF) Secretary Heather Wilson and chief of staff Gen. David Goldfein has unveiled an initiative, titled “The Air Force We Need.”

    The new strategy calls for the service to gain 74 combat squadrons in order to deal with threats from China and Russia.

    According to USA Today, The Air Force We Need is based on President Donald Trump’s defense strategy, assessments of the military strength of adversaries and the ability of the Air Force to confront them, Wilson and Goldfein said. The 2018 National Defense Strategy, released in January, calls on the Pentagon to defend the homeland, maintain the nuclear weapons deterrent, defeat China or Russia, deal with threats such as Iran and North Korea and continue to fight extremists.<<

    In simple words, U.S. Air Force (USAF) Secretary Heather Wilson and chief of staff Gen. David Goldfein demand about (lets say 20 birds per squadron) 1480 planes. Current inventory of combat aircrafts, (fighters and bombers) is about 2200. Possibly they mean the phasing out and replacing of old planes like F16-F15 early versions and A10. Realistic plan although ambitious , given the current economic turbulence and decline.
