I heared the US infantry is very happy with that weapon in iraq, hell H&K is even using it as base for MG43

That is the ultimate irony, really. The M60 was bassed off German technology (specificaly the MG42) and now it is being re-germanified.

although mg4 is completely re designed and they have eliminated the old m249 problems it doesnt have much similarity's left to the old M249

Oh...you meant the M249...My mistake. I thought you meant the M60.

I dont really mind if it is an improved M249, I dont have a grudge against it or something. Glad to hear HK is working their magic on it.

the back half of the gun looks like the g-36 IMO due to the handlebar and the optical sight and also the buttsock looks similar too. but the front hald looks like the m249 except the sight on top of the barrel is gone

I wonder how does heavy barreled rifles compare or stand up against dedicated LMG like M249. Why did the PRC army use the type 81 HB type and not design a dedcated LMG.

Btw, if you ever have the chance, you should try firing the Ultimax100. Eventhough it looks like a cheap 'tommy gun', the firing power is superb. I still remember how i manage to chip off a big piece of the target board during life firing.:D :nono:

M-60 came from MG42? That's news for me..... Why did it retire anyway?

Also, the MG43 fires only belts, right?
Hmm, how hard would it be to turn the Ultimax into an AR?

Well M60 was retired and replaced whit FN MAG/M240 because original design had some problems whit design flaws and unreliability and M60 e3 version was complete fiasco…

One of the problems of original version was that the bipods and gas chamber were permanently attached to the barrel, so replacement of the barrel was quite difficult and shooter required heat protecting gloves for that task. Also barrel should be changed after 200 round of the rapid fire.
Another problem was fragility of parts, like the firing pin which often break right behind the forward shoulder…

Current M60e4 version solved majority of this problems but its highly unlikely that USMC would retire combat proven M240 MG and replace them whit M60E4…
