Ukrainian rebels Vs IS death match

Lieutenant General
Looking around lately, there is such seriousness in the world, and it is reflected here, so maybe its time for a little light hearted fun.

It seems that both the Ukrainian Novorussian rebel alliance and the IS caricature worthy terrorist army have been performing far better on the battlefield then most would have believed possible if not for the evidence.

Both started from humble beginnings, yet have each grown into de factor armies complete with armour and artillery, and potentially even an Air Force if they could get their captured aircraft operational, and have both scored significant and continuous military victories against conventional army opponents, who on paper at least, should have steamrolled them.

This is not a thread about how that came to be, this is a thread about what you think would happen if the Novorussian rebels and the IS went face to face in combat.

Since this is a completely factious scenario, let's try and set a fair stage and create a new land called Novostan, which boarders Russia, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. It bestrides the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans. Has a population of 50-50 mix of Sunnis and ethnic Russians.

The Novorussians launched an insurrection against an unpopular government, and the IS moved in from their safe havens in Syria to seize large sways of the Sunni populated areas with popular acquiescence if not support and declared a caliphate.

The government forces who have previously been sandwiched between the two sides have suddenly collapsed, with the troops abandoning their equipment and arms and fleeing across the boarders to Russia and Turkey to surrender.

Both the Novorussians and IS surge forwards to fill the vacuum and seize abandoned territory and weapons and come face to face and fights.

Who wins and why? Have fun but play nice now.

Novorussians Rebels

Realising that the IS rebels are only backed by the Saudis and Turkey. Russia declares a humanitarian corridor in Novostan. 16 days of precision carpet bombing later. The Novorussian rebels expels the main body of IS rebels back into Syria.

What follows is 6 months of ethnic cleansing conducted by the Novorussian Rebels. Reports leaked from the country describes such horrific scenes like groups of Sunni men being tied together and then "disappeared" with explosives. Russia of cause deny such actions were carried out by Russian peace keepers that are now in country and blames non-russian affliated militia when video evidence surfaces. A large exodus of Sunni refugees creates a massive humanitarian crisis in Turkey and Syria.

For the next 18 months, high intensity counter insurgency operations did little to reduce the level of violance in Novostan. The Russian Duma finally agrees to send forces directly into Syria in order to defeat the IS.

Future historians agree that this was the defining moment for the modern Russian federation. 20 years later, this event would be known as Russia's Second Afghanistan and the major contributing factor in the break up of the Russian Federation.

Actually I think a fairer competition would between Ebola and ISIS. Who would you put your money on? For me I certainly cheer on Ebola more. Let's see them jihadis tweet that after they are covered in blood

depends, in a muslim country ISIS would mop the floor with Novrussian rebels. but if we talkin about a purely tactical faceoff, Novrussian rebels are reputed to be more skillful and disciplined.

ISIS definitely has the advantage in the recruitment factor. The Ukrainian rebels have been pretty hampered by their lack of manpower in the current conflict.

I guess that's what you meant by being in a muslim country, but I think the ability to recruit and expand is part of an army's strategic advantages.

If ISIS and the Ukrainian rebels were to fight each other in a traditional, state-to-state war, I'm guessing ISIS would overwhelm the rebels through sheer numbers.

I always have in mind Mexican drug cartels vs ISIS. Al Gore will be the official announcer and referee.

Rule against who-vs-who may be obsolete if it were to happen...

ISIS Plans To Invade United States Through Mexico, But Drug Cartels Could Fight Back
ISIS Plans To Invade United States Through Mexico, U.S. Official Warns

ISIS militants have reportedly been talking about invading the United States through the border with Mexico, a United States official warned this week.

Speaking before a Senate committee, the under secretary for intelligence and analysis at the Department of Homeland Security said militants have been caught on social media discussing ways to infiltrate the United States.

“There have been Twitter and social-media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility,” said Francis Taylor in response to a question from Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican.

Taylor added that the ISIS invasion talk wasn’t too much of a threat, and that he was “satisfied that we have the intelligence and the capability at our border that would prevent that activity.”

There could be major problems if ISIS planned to invade the United States through Mexico. U.S. officials say that the Mexican drug cartels controlling the region are defensive of their turf, especially regarding threats that could bring the United States government and its firepower to their lucrative drug-smuggling territory.

At any rate, ISIS would not have the capacity to invade anyway, said Nicholas Rasmussen, deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

“We do not assess right now they have the capability to mount an effective large-scale attack on the United States,” Rasmussen said.

This comes after an alert from Sheriff Gary Painter, who works near El Paso, that an ISIS terrorist cell formed just a few miles from the Texas border. Painter claimed that the Islamic State militants have converged in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. That region has been one of the most violent, as clashes between drug cartels and with Mexican military officials have claimed thousands of lives.

Painter added that Texas law enforcement officers have been advised to be on the lookout for “suspicious, potential terrorist activity.” There have not yet been any concrete reports of ISIS activity near the United States border with Mexico, however.
