so there is a power station in schastya that powers much of the region. LPR forces will almost certainly make this their primary objective in case hostility resumes, both for its power station as well as its proximity to lugansk. this could be a rare case in which winter might work in favour of NAF, since ukrainian army's defensive network around schastya encompasses a river that runs between the city and LPR territory to its south. frozen surfaces in winter time will facilitate easier crossing.

ofc defenders of the city have the option of destroying the power station before withdrawing but that would probably draw a lot of criticism

I understand what you are saying, and that is exactly my point as well, winter affects everyone. and the strain it places on logistics and troop movement will undoubtedly hamper offensive operations more than defensive operations, which is why i was a little surprised to see that both sides seem to be gearing up for another round (again, i dont think either side was inclined to resume open hostility but were prompted by a lack of trust). it is simply not a good time to get away from the comfort and safety of your defensive position out to the cold and unpredictable malice of winter offensive, unless you see an exploitable open in enemy defense that would allow you to secure victory in one swift strike, but i doubt there is any.

Well that is the nub of the question isn't it?
I think the common ground for both sides is that the status quo is unacceptable. The Novorossiyans are still bottled up in a territory too small to be viable, while Kiev cannot stomach being held at bay by such a small rump.
Add to that the deep seated problems that winter will bring, that the distraction and unifying effecting of another round of full warfare is going to outweigh the very obvious risks.
The other question is that is this going to explode all of a sudden into one or more full massive offensives, or is it just going to continue the current slow escalation, progressively dragging in and involving more and more forces on both sides?

I am sure that from a purely military perspective, that the sudden onslaught makes the most sense for both sides, but that the political considerations almost dictate that a slow a gradual collapse of this ceasefire which is not a ceasefire into a new full scale war, which will not be a war and which will not start in any identifiable or attributable way.

Spy satellite images Ukrainian Su-27 shot down MH17 with cannon and air-air missiles (you make your own conclusion).

I will now get back to bottling my Malbec

Two very fascinating videos.
I have spent quite a bit a time trying to see what destroyed the BMP, but it is very difficult to tell. All I can see is that something struck the vehicle at the front and in a very low position. It looked rather like a mine at ground level to be honest, but that seems unlikely given it was right by a Ukrainian position. Then again, the base was coming under artillery fire and I know that the NAF are fond of firing mines ahead and behind of moving Ukrainian armour.
The other option of course is that it simply hit an unexploded artillery round.

The Satellite images re MH17 were certainly interesting. Like all these things, it depends of the authenticity of the material being verifiable. It would also be useful to verify the identity of Mr George Bilt. I can't really say any more than that.

I concur. With the proliferation of Photoshop and very good video editing software (can think of the name) anything can be created. As you said it depends on the source.

Interesting that the satellite images can capture the tracer rounds coming out from that SU-27 shooting MH-17 777 airplane. If that pilot was flying from that angle as in the picture, should he notice that it's a civilian plane not a military one?

The video is also in the wrong place it shows the Jet a full 31 miles west of the crash thats a long way to fall if you just took a missile and again the weird angle of attack. Speaking of attack that's no tracer that's a missile... I thought the Russians said guns?

scale is off, Weather conditions are wrong. and why is everything in perfect focus? optics would focus on one or the other either clear jets or clear earth. oh and the passenger jet... is pointed in the wrong direction! The ground lay is north being up left being West right being east. The Su27 is coming in from the south west. Which would be logical. The Boeing is heading south east? Away from it's destination. Unless we flip it. But if we do that the land marks don't match and the flanker is coming out of Russian airspace.... Dun dun dun!
