There were recently local elections in Ukraine about which my Dutch paper only said that voting was very sparse, until yesterday. The latest news, on page 13, of NRC, is that "Saakashvili opens an attack against the mayor of Odessa". The mayor got just more than half the votes while Saakashvili's candidate, a former Microsoft lawyer, only got a quarter. Saakashvili says the mayor is corrupt and he can know it. He is himself indicted for corruption in Georgia. He now tries to prove the election process was corrupted.
BTW his wife and children remain with her parents in the Netherlands.

Guess we will need to see what action is to be taken on this - repair of the lines and status quo restored, or new tension and reactive measures:

The Russian government has no information as to whether Kiev has taken any action to restore electricity to Crimea, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Some 1.6 million people remain without electricity in Russia's Black Sea peninsula, after several power line support structures in southern Ukraine that supply electricity to Crimea were blown up on Friday.

"We have no information yet… whether any actions are taken, in particular when they will have an effect, when electricity will be restored, although we call on them to restore power," Peskov told reporters.

Most of the region was in darkness after electricity was cut. Crimea declared a state of emergency and switched to locally-based power generation. Medical and other crucial elements of the social infrastructure are on backup power.

On Sunday, the Russian Energy Ministry said in a memo that up to 13 gas turbine electric generators were bought online to provide power for Crimea for up to a month. Emergency electricity and water supply schedules have been introduced on the peninsula.

Germany's foreign ministry said that it considers the blackout of Crimea by extremist groups a criminal act.

The blackout in Russia's Crimea peninsula is a criminal act that must be investigated, a German Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.

The Crimean blackout began on Sunday, after Ukrainian extremist groups blew up power line pylons on the Ukrainian side of the border. The Ukrainian power utility has thus far been unable to repair the pylons, as extremists maintain access to the site and local police have not been able to gain access.

Around 2.5 million residents of Crimea have been left with no constant electricity supply as a result.

"Attacks on Ukraine's public infrastructure, including that providing Crimea with electricity, are criminal acts. We expect them to be perceived as such and investigated by Ukrainian officials," Martin Schaefer said.

The spokesman added that Berlin expected power to be quickly restored in the Black Sea peninsula.

German media also criticized the attacks, with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung commentator Reinhard Veser writing that the attacks show criminal negligence toward the peninsula's residents, which could also lead to tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

Ukrainian energy utility Ukrenergo previously said that the power line downing caused considerable difficulties, including the forced shut-off of several power stations. The utility warned that shutoffs at nuclear reactors in the area could lead to accidents.

Funny, I would have considered such an attack a terrorist act.

I would imagine that's precisely what Germany, America, Britain or any other western country would charge you with if you blew up critical public infrastructure for political reasons on their territory, or even in neighbouring countries if the infrastructure was serving mainly them, like, oh I don't know, the gas pipeline that also runs through Ukraine?

If someone blew that up, I cannot imagine it being described as anything other than a terrible, terrible terrorist attack.

It's definitely an act of sabotage but terrorism..I doubt it. Terrorism requires death and mayhem among human lives.

True but it still needs to do harm onto others even if there is no death, otherwise a simple arsenic fire can be call "terrorism".

Cutting power to millions surely qualifies as causing harm to civilians.

I have absolutely no doubt that if someone blew up some critical infrastructure that causes such massive powercuts in the US or Europe and the guys did it for political reasons, they would be charged with terrorism offenses.
