Sooner or later the government is either going to have to go back to something like Cold War Budget levels or give up trying to maintain the current range of capability. Both choices will be politically toxic but we can’t go on with these regular crises.

Possession of the carrier force has been intrinsic to the organisation of the Royal Navy for the best part of a century, despite many ignorant politicians attempts to get rid and transform te RN into the armed wing of HM Coast Guard, and that is what it would be with Carriers. The RN's plans to stay 'in the game' and at least match inferior Nation's Navies isn't the reason we have a manpower crisis, that blame lies squarely at the feet of the Traitors Cameron and Osbourne whose 2010 SDSR was practically written by Putin.

Not saying they were on his payroll, just that they proved to be 'useful idiots', and there are so many of those around in politics these days.

not sure why you barked at me earlier today but that's OK,

I maintain the RN should've adapted its acquisitions to the budget, and since I've repeatedly posted about 'situations' like

OTH AShMs Nov 11, 2016

sea-mines Apr 5, 2017

fixing Type 45 Mar 22, 2018

replacing the frigates Nov 15, 2018

and so on,

it's clear to me the RN should've procured LHDs or LPHs instead of the QEs

EDIT I have to add the Admiralty should've been protesting the ridiculous cuts, as I said:
personally I admire what the commander of the French Military did this summer (I now located the post: Jul 19, 2017), assuming anything didn't get lost in translation, he stepped down as the budget would be too low; he lost his job, but kept his honor!
Bravo, Monsieur!

I didn't bark. You're still alive...

You used the pejorative term MEGLOMANIA with relation the RN's plans for carriers. Are the French also Meglomaniacs? The Australians? The Japanese? Any other Nation with carriers? No? Just the British then. You're a few centuries out of date with that accusation, the Empire disappeared more than half a century ago too.

As for LHDs, an inferior type to what we have now. The QECs are not intended to be cut price Nimitzes, theyu are multi role flexible aviation platforms, that can deliver whatever air power we choose to put aboard them as required. We don't need LHDs, we have LPDs and LSDs to handle amphibious shipping. LHDs tend to be slow, cramped for whatever size they are and too busy dealing with getting troops ashore to give adequate attention to ASW or Air Defence let alone CAS. Listening to such 'voices of reason last time got us the Invincibles, which though fine ships were too small to do any job allocated to them properly.

We now have the right ships for the next fifty years, like it or lump it.
