Which is why I suggested that we might see a reversal of the Sovremenny deal, either with the PLAN selling the Sovs back to Russia, or with the Russian Navy purchasing major combatants -like the 052D- from China. Although that idea had been pilloried, by some, here, uuuhhhh, it's a possibility!

It might happen if Russia sees an urgent need for modern DDGs or view their ship building industry is not up to required standards for constructing heavy modern warships but I think it's unlikely. They're capable on producing modern combat vessels on their own, as evident in their new frigate classes which incorporates their latest technologies learned from their corvette production and export vessels (partially for India, as they're a major customer and force for Russian naval tech and ship development).

Also their defence planning is still to foster R&D to remain self reliable for all of their major military applications. However since now, they did out source construction for platforms they never produced before like the Mistral LHD deal with France. But after Ukraine, they're now very wary of outsourcing any major military production especially if another international crisis arrives. Although if the western embargo stays, they might be forced to to buy major components from China such as the recent engines for their patrol boats, but unlikely purchasing a whole vessel in the future.

Guys, the whole discussion about the Chinese potentially selling the Chinese Sovs back to Russia is completely off topic on this thread about the Chinese Type 055.

Having said that, I will go out on a limb...but it is a big thick one in my opinion...and I will say that it is extremely unlikely, to the point of almost being absurd in my opinion, that the Chinese will ever sell their Soveremennies back to Russia.

First, those vessels are still very capable and powerful surface combatants in the PLAN inventory. They have four of them...and then they have two Type 052B destroyers that use many of the same systems and are like a PLAN Soveremenny, So six vessels.

Second, the Russians have moved well beyond the Sovermenny themselves. Of the 17 they built for themselves, they only have four remaining in service. As stated, they are actively building two classes of strong frigtaes now.

First there is the Admiral Gorshkov frigate class that they are actively building. These are very modern and very powerful frigates and displace close to 5,000 tons full load. They have already launched two of them, two more are building and they plan sixteen to twenty of them. Less powerful, but still very capable, they are aslo building the Admiral Grigorovich class frigates at about 4,000 tons...which are basically the same as the Talwar frigates they built for India. They have already launched two of these and are planning four more.

So, if you want to speak more about the PLAN Sovs, take the discussion to the PLAN Sov Thread which is dedicated to it.

Thanks.

Someone made a side comparison of 052D and what 055 could look like based on current form of the Wuhan mock-up:

Did they do a diagram to compare the beam as well?

Here's an overlap from the same image:346udmcMOD.jpg

The size difference looks a bit modest to me, I would expect the 055 to have:
Likely - a longer and wider helipad, one that can accommodate a Z-8 size helo
Likely - same with the hangar
50/50 - more room amidships to accommodate more VLS
Personal pet peeve - additional pair of gun CIWS facing port and starboard, a missile CIWS replaces the front facing gun CIWS

Definitely the best drawing I've seen yet, although I think they've included some telemetry antennae from the mock up and the aft "block" of the mock up, not to mention the stepped aft mast which probably won't be on the real thing. I've done a rush job of what I expect the real thing to more resemble.

Also, like panasian said I would've expected 055 to be more like 180+ meters long rather than what it is here, more of a 160-170 meters. I have a feeling they underestimated the bow length of 055 a little, and they've used the same helipad length as 052D which may not be a sensible projection giving 055 is expected to carry Z-18s which are a meaningfully larger aircraft than Ka-28s and Z-9s

That's not modest to me at all. Quite significant actually. Not just hull length but the entire superstructure and even the hanger is more volumous.Besides that picture is a linear 2D. A ship's size is more about displacement and I'm sure 055 is not only longer but wider as well and probably displaces well in excess of 2 or 3 k tons if not much more.

I mean it's absolutely a significant increase compared to 052D, but it is "modest" compared to what some other rumours were saying, with 12k tons being standard displacement meaning a full displacement in excess of 13k tons.

So while their depicted 055 may be 2,000 or 3,000 tons heavier than 052D's 7,500 tons, in some respects it we might be projecting a 5,000-6,000 ton increase in displacement compared to 052D insteaad.

I've changed it a little, length wise to reflect what I think it would scale like, I stretched the bow and helipad basically. Also, their scale that they have is calibrated a little wrongly, so better to look at the relative size of the two ships instead.

Cool! That's definitely more the size I anticipate the 055 to be.

Quite impressed how streamlined and clean the Type 055 would look like compared to the 052 types and the various Burke variants.
