055 DDG Large Destroyer Thread

What are those two structures? For air defence like the RIM-116s with the U.S Navy? Or are those really decoy launchers?

Reading through the Pentagon's 2018 Annual Report to Congress, section on Type 055 Destroyer, Page 66:

"The PLAN’s force structure continues to evolve, incorporating more platforms with the versatility for both offshore and longdistance power projection. China is engaged in series production of the LUYANG III-class DDG, the JIANGKAI II-class FFG, and the JIANGDAO-class FFL. China also launched its first RENHAI-class (Type 055) CG in 2017, with commissioning expected by 2019. At least three additional units of this class are currently under construction. The RENHAI CG is a 10,000-ton design that can carry an array of long-range ASCMs and long-range SAMs, and will likely be able to launch ASBMs and LACMs once these weapons are available. The RENHAI CG will be China’s premiere carrier escort for blue-water operations."

Is this a credible assessment? There has been rumors of a ship borne ASBM program. I remember seeing a slide depicting a ship borne ASBM with hypersonic glide vehicle delivery on this thread a while ago, but nothing concrete to suggest it is indeed in development.

That does not sound credible at all. Where would it even be launched from? Annual Pentagon reports are not as accurate as they want you to think it is.

A cold-launched full-bore missile from a UVLS could easily be an SRBM, though with a somewhat modest range. The DF-15 is 9.1m length x 1m diameter. It's not hard to imagine an 8m x 0.8m ballistic missile with a range of 400-600km.

the people that wrote the report definitely directly or indirectly look at things that get posted here. Big time users here like blitzo and deino all post on twitter and get followed by a bunch of analysts.

I noticed late in the evening yesterday, before I fell asleep, I had been thinking about the blockbuster in bottom-right which might fit something like a Tochka

(minus the wings LOL) so I had been thinking about dozen of AShBMs launched in the middle of Pacific which would be the ultimate plunging fire, like one century after the US and Japanese Navies came out with the requirement for plunging fire in the middle of Pacific

I believe such a missile was mentioned either in this thread or on one of the missile threads. The post included a diagram indicating a hyper velocity glider and was supposed to have a range of about 1,000 km and be fired in volleys of 7 missiles to ensure a hit. If 4-600 km range is not hard to imagine, an HVG payload would probably extend that a bit.

Now that I think about it more, a full-bore missile would not be able to use the walls of the UVLS cell itself and so would need to be containerized, which means more likely something in the neighborhood of 75cm (or even less) for a maximum diameter.
