Construction of China's Type 055 destroyers forges ahead

Commercial satellite imagery taken on 11 April shows that significant progress has been made in the construction of the first four Type 055 destroyers for China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

At the Jiangnan Changxingdao shipyard near Shanghai, where construction of the lead ship of the class commenced in late 2014, Hull 1 appears to have all the modules in place and most of the modules for Hull 2 are in position.

In late 2016, hull modules appeared on the side of a graving dock at the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) yard and by 7 March keel blocks were being positioned in the dock to support the construction of two hulls side by side. By 11 April, modules for two Type 055 hulls had been lifted from the dockside onto the keel blocks and assembly was clearly underway.

Measurements from the images indicate that the Type 055 will be about 180 m long and 19 m wide, meaning that it will be significantly larger than the 7,500-tonne Luyang III-class (Type 052D) destroyers (157 m long and 17 m wide). This places the size of the Type 055 between the Republic of Korea Navy's Sejong Daewang (KDX-3) class (166 m/10,500 tonnes) and the Russian Federation Navy's Slava class (186 m/11,700 tonnes).

The images from Changxingdao show the module that will contain the forward vertical launch system (VLS) cells, with a second grid of cells set to be positioned forward of the hangar.

The forward grid appears to be divided into 16 sections, four across and four deep, with overall dimensions of 13 m in length and 10.5 m in width.

Comparison with the dimensions of the two 32-cell VLS grids fitted to the Type 052D suggests that the VLS in the Type 055 will have 64 cells in the forward grid.

nice to see SOC still at it.

And nice to see the continued work at DL on both ships. It'll be crazy to think that in a year or so they'll probably be launching two 055s from the same drydock at the same time.

As for 055's dimensions, I think 180m is 2-3m longer than what 055 may actually be, and I think the beam of 055 is closer to 20.5m than 19m based on my own measurements, but no biggy.

In subsequent photos where we had both a 052D and a 055 it seemed the beam might be closer to around 21 meters...

just google earth.

are you suggesting GE images? To be honest I think the most accurate way of measuring is using the distance tool on GE or other similar software. it's not perfect but it's the best we got.

This monster will have 64 VLS forward and what at the aft ? 64, 48 or 32?

Imagine it has 64 + 64 that's 128 VLS

Double the Type 052D and 4 times the load of Type 054A !!

They are making 2+2 units so 4 x Type 055

Missile manufacturing must be over the moon with orders !

The fact that they are building four of these large vessels simultaneously is impressive.

The US Navy regularly has four Arleigh Burkes being worked on at once...but they do not come out so closely spaced. The two yard working on them can produce two a year...but it is really going to end up like every 18 moths.

This work that the PLAN has done on the Type 052D and has now replicaed on the Type 055 is simply huge in terms of it giving the PR the capability to catch up in numbers of modern vessels very quikly.

Now...I xpect they have upped their recruitment and their building of all of the eaponry and ordinance needed to outfit this many vessels as well.

...and that itself is another veyr impressive thing as we watch them come ut and get outfitted and commissioned.

The rate they do that will tell us how much they have uped their game in those other areas as well.
