Why design a new cruiser class when SSBNs are pretty much perfect for such a role?

But the key problem, irrespective of what carries such missiles, is that if you start popping ballistic missiles off from the middle of the sea, there is a good chance someone else will think it's a nuclear alpha strike and launch a 'counter' nuclear strike before your missiles even hit home to show they are conventionally armed.
Today's major nuclear powers all have highly survivable second strike capabilities, there is no need to "pull the trigger before you get shot", therefore a nuclear exchange due to misinterpretation is very unlikely. Besides, a full-scale nuclear attack targeting the mainland should look quite different from a ASBM strike, both in scale and in trajectory.

@Higgle,

The images aren't showing - similar to the CV-17-thread - so PLEASE !!!! try to upload them here directly at the forum (See "Upload a file"-button) - a feature that works quite fine - or to a host like imgur. To simply linking them here is often not the best, since when the link is broken, the images are gone.

Thanks,
Deino

I usually link directly to the other forums and I've had no issue, but apparently there is now. I'll upload my pictures to imgur first for now.

Is this really DL#1? Because the satellite photos actually show a more completed stage than this photo would indicate.

Maybe this could be DL#2 (4th 055)? Or an older photo?

Looking through the source thread, it didn't specify. Could be the third 055, could be the fourth. But regardless of whether it's the third ship or the fourth, it still shows impressively speedy progress on Chinese naval shipbuilding. It seems like not even half a year ago that we first caught a glimpse of the first 055.
