but at this point I have to say that particular object does look like a gun housing.
At this point it could be a tent so that the internal parts won't get wet in bad weather. There's no superstructure yet and they already started installing main gun turret there? lol, that's not the way you build a warship. Those things go last after all of the main work is done...

It definitely could be some sort of cover structure, and as I said the picture isn't very clear.

What are the odds of 055 having half of the forward deck being flush? As depicted in an artist's depiction in the latest 055 post by Henri K.? Drawing shows the deck being tad lower once it reaches the gun, and is generally much closer to what 052d has.

A question preoccupied me for some time.

It is technical possible to put some DF-21D missile with big VLS-lauchers (2x2 of the universal VLS-launcher of 052D) on board of the 055? For four missile you would need the space of 16 ex universal VLS of 052D.

What would be the impact to have DF-21D on board of type 055 destroyer?

The 055 and pretty much any other standard destroyer/cruiser-sized ship lacks the depth/draft needed to vertically house a DF-21D at 10.7m in height. You could arrange such a missile in a slanted internal magazine like what is used on the Kirov battlecruiser for its Granits at 10m height, but then again the Kirov is a 28,000 ton ship, more than twice the displacement of the 055, and even this ship cannot carry its Granits vertically.

You're talking about putting something the size of a SLBM into a DDG hull, which even after extensive (read: uneconomical) modifications to its hull design to accommodate such a thing, it will stick all the way up to the bridge level if not beyond; and when it lit its stage one motor (it's a cold-launch design), you can kiss all the armored windows on the bridge and just about all the radar and antennas on the superstructure goodbye - essentially, before it even hits anything, you've just took a 055 (the launch boat) out of play.

If you don't believe me the size difference between DF-21D and all the other ship-borne, VLS-friendly missiles, just go and watch the 2015 parade, and see for yourselves.

Seriously, DF-21D got adopted isn't because it's a smashingly good idea but rather a "when you don't have a choice" one - even now, without ASBM, China really lacks in capability to target the USN carrier battlegroup. The goal of the exercise isn't so much about actually hitting it, but rather as a deterrent through the presence of such capability. The US would say in public that such a thing won't work, but just look at how much effort they put into the missile defence upgrades to counter such possibility, as well as the USN carrier battlegroup no longer do the show of force cruise off Chinese waters like back in 1996, proves the value of ABSM systems like DF-21D. Still, such a thing is destined to be land-based, it'd never be deployed on a surface ship due to the reasons mentioned above, and won't be deployed aboard SSBN which the PLAN has very limited boats to begin with, and they're all needed for SLBM nuclear strike package.

Not just the size but the weight and launch type as well. The DDG platform even one as big as the 055 would not be an ideal launch platform. Even if mounted in a slanted position it may alter the weight distribution of the ship and just like the typical ICBM it has a hard launch i.e you're basically launching a rocket into space! the immense back blast and violent launch would destabilize the vessel.

I wouldn't launch an ICBM on anything less than a 20,000 t ship and even then it would have to be on a flat thick deck.

Unless the 055 designers had DF21D in mind when they drew out her blueprints which I seriously doubt they will not be part of her arsenal. You almost need a dedicated ship just for that kind of role but it's silly IMHO.

A SSGN would be a far more ideal platform to carry DF21s.

just to appreciate the sizes / volumes, let me repost

no news but an amazing view from below of the cylinders of the Fort:

I believe these are 7.25 meters long (so "small" in the context here :)

DF-21 series derived from the JL-1 SLBM, so not even a SSGN would fit (SSGN house SLCMs, and they're still smaller than a SLBM), you'd need at least a Golf-class sub to house and launch that.

For surface ship? Cold or hot-launch regardless, we're still talking about doing it with a surface ship. So even if it's still technologically feasible, nobody would pursue this tech-tree based on realistic grounds, and certainly no DDG in this generaton, or CG and even BB in previous generations, would be realisticly feasible to do so.

Think we've just kill this horse, lobbed off its head and delivered to his bed, Godfather style, so let's move on, please.
