I would not be at all surprised if 055 displaces 12,0000+ tons and only has 96 VLS. The 055 VLS is larger than the Mk. 41 VLS on the Arleigh Burke class, and AB Flight III is up around 10,000 tons and we know that ship is considered too small with no potential for future growth, compromised AMDR, and who knows what else.
The universal VLS isn't that much larger than the Mk 41, certainly not enough that 128 couldn't fit on the 055. If we end up seeing less than that on the 055 it will be because the designers wanted only that many, not because they couldn't fit in 128 universal VLS cells.

Of course they could fit 128 (or more!) VLS on 055. But then they wouldn't have the same robust growth potential. The point is to avoid USN's mistakes, not replicate them.

I personally think they could fit a sensible no. of VLS (such as 128) while still retaining sufficient room for future growth, given the expected full displacement of this ship will likely exceed 13k tons given the standard displacement will probably be about 12k tons.

TBH I think if the 055 is in the range of 12-13k full displacement, it would actually be underarmed if it had less than 128 cells.

What is that structure behind the smoke stack and in front of the rear VLS?
What is it for? Would it not be better to eliminate it and increase the rear VLS size?

sorry if this is asked already

More about progress of DDG 055......
203_219254_401947.jpg

Latest photos show there are more than one 055 being constructed.... For the first see later pics, the second modulised sections are being assembled in hall ( as shown pictorally above) and are being welded together...

Bow section of the second 055 now appearing on the construction platform...

203_219256_358838.jpg

055 is the first DDG that exceeds 10, 000- 12 000 tons. Length greater than 170 m, beam about 18m.. Blue ocean capable, enhanced cruising distances....

203_219257_507573.jpg

It has greatly increased anti-ship, anti-land and anti-air capability. It has missiles of different sorts for different functions.. there would be at least 128 vertical launched missile.. therefore it needs a platform of displacement over 10 000 tons.
The vertical launched missiles can be hot & cold launch, including YJ-18 antiship missile, CJ-10G cuise missile for land attack..

Sectionised modules of the first DDG 055 circled red waiting to be welded together... design of 055 is rather conservative, but use many mature and proved technologies. Per unit cost RMB 35 billion or USD 6 billion...less than 1/10 cost of USN DDG 1000...
