Type 051 (Luda) Class DDG, News, Pics, info

In relation to 051 Nanchang, this vessel was officially retired on the 8th Sept, as has been reported today from various sources...........don't know how some reported this vessel was retired way back in June.

Anyway, definitely only 6 Luda's left now.

With three 052Ds joining the fleet this year, it seems likely that two or three of the six remaining 051s will be decommissioned. The oldest unit is 109 Kaifeng commissioned in 1982, while 110 Dalian and 134 Zunyi were commissioned in 1984.

With the new 052Ds very soon Daddys retired especialy the 2 Luda I/051D no modernised with outdated AShMs and don' t have HQ-7 than 4 Luda III/IV051G1/2/DT have.

Good point about upgraded vs. non-upgraded, but will they replace 164 Guilin 051D commissioned 1987 before 109 Kaifeng 051DT commissioned 1982? We will see!

With China not be too curious

Of the more modern of the remaining Luda class, what are their current weapon systems fitted?

As far as I know they have the following:
- HQ-7 (8 short range SAM for air defence)
- 16 AShM (C-803)
- 2 double barrel 130mm (#109/110) or 2 double barrel 100mm (#165/166) main guns
- 3 double barrel 76A 37mm guns for air defence
they should also have some torpedos and anti-submarine rockets

This would make their weapons fit quite similar to the 053H3, but with double the anti ship missiles and two main guns instead of a helicopter.

Retire them already.

The retention of 1980s vessels has more to do with working towards a particular fleet size and structure than the capabilities they provide.

Five years from now I expect the oldest combatants in the fleet will be the 052s and 053H1Gs, both less than 30yrs old (where today the oldest combatants are 36yrs old).
