CV-18 Fujian/003 CATOBAR carrier thread

Well, technically, a carrier can be both stobar and catobar. Like Ulyanovsk was supposed to be. And there were actually rumors way back, after Liaoning was launched, that future carrier would be based on Ulyanovsk design.

That's just me playing the devil's advocate. I don't wish to discuss the actual likelihood of 003 being anything...

Agreed, even if IMO this sketch is too crude to show anything clear, it is anyway a strange "structure" that reminds me very much of a rolled up gym mat.

It could very well be one side of the bow, the curve is matching the classic shape of a bow.

It looks like there is a slope to it, almost as if it is a ski-ramp. Perhaps this is what POP3 (or was it fzgfzy?) meant by the Type 003 having both novel and "Soviet" characteristics.

It’s possible they’re adding a ski ramp just for interoperability with older J-15s. Also possible that this isn’t a ramp at all but a cross section of the bulbous bow. Given the stage of the ship’s construction, I think the latter is more likely than the former. If the ship did have a ramp we shouldn’t see it until after construction has almost reached deck level, at least judging from how it was done with CV-002

Though, on second thought, if they are indeed pursuing a modular approach to CV-003’s construction then maybe using CV-002’s construction as a roadmap may not be the best idea.

I missed to post this sketch too but I only noticed it right now:

What's that round bow-like part?

If this is the bow section it looks very much like a ramp... but that would mean no. 003 is not a CATOBAR.

TBH i have no idea what is that. The sides of that "rolled up gym mat" dont look like being part of a carrier ramp. Only photos will clear the issue.

#003 will likely be built in separate blocks and then fitted together in its final stages of construction. Like the QE.
