In any case, I am going with the theory that Carrier 12 to 15 is South China Seas Hainan assignment, and Carrier 16 to 19 is North Seas Qingdao assignment.

The moment the 002 was ordered to head down south, is why and when she removed her original 17 number, resulting in crews hurriedly repainting over the number they painted on the hull.

I suspect they were originally planning to deploy 002 with the North Seas Fleet and were already putting on the "17" number. Then suddenly the higher ups called, probably because of Xi Jing Ping or the Politburo, to have a more assertive stance on the South China Sea, where the USS Ronald Reagan has been prowling around lately. The higher ups wanted the carrier to be moved down south instead. So they erased the "17" number, cancelled her Qingdao commissioning ceremony, had her pick up her complement and dashed through the Taiwan Straits for Hainan.

002's sudden relocation from its original Qingdao assignment to Hainan meant she would trade her previously assigned North Sea pennant in exchange for a South China Seas pennant.

Only the Orangeman would make such decision, CMC is not a one man show, they planed in long term of 10 to 30 years, daily or weekly affairs are irrelevant.

Nice story, but the harbour for the ship was build many month ago, so no sudden call but long planned in advance.

Long planned in advance could be envisioning the third carrier to be deployed with the SCS fleet, not necessarily with the second. The reason for the northern assignment for the second carrier is because it is still viewed as a training carrier, and the J-15 base is up in the north, which is also closer to the Shenyang factory and facility. The Bohai Bay and the Yellow Sea are more geographically secluded and is more convenient to do training operations there. There is a timetable to put a carrier in the South China Seas, but no one thought it should be now.

The deployment of a Type 901 AOE, 965 Hulun Lake to the SCS is already a clue of a possible soon assignment of a carrier to the SCS months ago, though it is not a foolproof clue. The Type 901 has gone and supported other task groups before, and it can be argued that a Type 901 AOE deployment in the SCS is there to support the Liaoning when she heads down south like she did a few times this year and to train in these waters ahead. In any case, 965 is the older of the two Type 901 and is assumed to be the Liaoning's handmaid, while the newer one, 967 Chagan Lake, is assumed to be 002's handmaid and is still in the North Sea.

It can mean they planned to have a carrier in the SCS eventually, which is a difference from having one now. CMC is not inflexible and will respond quickly and change plans quickly to changes in situation.

I believe Liaoning is not longer viewed as training carrier after refit not so long time ago. Not to mention type 002

That might "officially" be but I must admit - and here connecting with the mystery, why there are not more J-15s produced - I won't be surprised (I'm currently spinning this as a theory) if the Liaoning will always remain a training vessel and the J-15s will be more or less re-assigned to the Type 002 as an operational carrier and the Liaoning will get a dedicated carrier-capable trainer (JL-10J).

By the way, the J-15s juts got new two-digit serial numbers, just in the same way the KJ-500H and KQ-200 also assigned to the South.

Ok guys, what do you think .... will we see the commissioning as rumoured today?

I don't see why not. If the PLAN went through the trouble of painting her pennant number, with a ceremony rehearsal at their home port then the commission ceremony is close at hand. We'll find out in a few hours.

This CV needs to be joined by more type 075 very soon, for China to meet big challenges from the adversaries.

My bet is that 075 will be based in Zhanjiang not Linyi base in Hainan. All the Type 71 assigned to the SCSF are based in Zhanjiang.
