Yes. I've seen destroyers refueled at the pier. And when I was aboard USS Hancock(CVA 19) we took on water from a water barge in Subic Bay RP and we took on fuel and water while in Pearl Harbor HI at the refueling pier...that was in 1975.

My thoughts is that besides being a replenishment test, the 002 is getting fueled up for its journey. Two destroyers have arrived in Dalian, 116 and 117, so the next trial will look like an exercise, with 002 leading a task group with the Type 901, the 117 and the 116. 002 will test its communications and data sharing with the other ships in a manner befitting an exercise, and may conduct another replenishment exercise at sea.

When referring to imminent refueling exercise I was rather considering one at sea not dockside, for instance, 901 refueling 2 or 3 ships simultaneously.

Exactly why I think they are bringing two other ships along.

From Raj 47. Not sure if this is an old photo notice the unfinished coating on the rear of AC
Fast combat support ship #965 #Hulunhu. Now out of flooded dock.

Yes, it's call INREP. or in dock replenishmenet. It's not common for obvious reasons but I wouldn't call it super rare either. Sometimes it's just easier especially if you are at a foreign POC or bases and you just want to transfer some stuff from one ship to the other especially if it's from another navy's aux ship. Happens. we share stuff sometimes! Not sure how it's reimbursed though if even.

Yes. Decommissioning of the replenisher Zuiderkruis in the dutch navy saw that ship refuel the 2nd replenisher we had the Amsterdam while in port.
The new JSS Karel Doorman fueled up another ship in port because it had to be emptied.
