After a fourth sea trial, China’s Type 001A aircraft carrier may go into service within months

  • Vessel returned to home port of Dalian on Tuesday after spending 13 days undergoing tests in the Yellow Sea
  • Naval expert says it may be ready in time for fleet review on April 23
UPDATED : Thursday, 10 January, 2019

Repeating once more, I am thinking April 23 will also do a dual commissioning ceremony for "Nanchang" and "Shandong".

Personally I would like to have seen a 3rd batch of J15 by now

Also new helicopters for this carrier

Also atleast some evidence of naval FC-31 V3

Air wings of carriers don’t look good

3rd carrier and no evidence of any more fixed wing or rotary aircraft

Even KJ-600 AWACS did not show up last year as rumoured

All the Chinese carriers built or in production are basically test carriers. I suspect we will hear more about the FC-31 or naval stealth before this May.
There is no need to rush things. The main priority is likely crew/pilot training and we have had reports of that being in progress.

Even once the third carrier is launched it will take a long time to fit it out and conduct trials.

I do think the Chinese need a subsonic small aircraft for the AWACS/transport/refuel tasks once their main carriers become operational.
There is a possibility these could be drone based but I think that is probably a bad idea in the near term.
I would make it turbofan rather than turboprop based like the KJ-600.
