BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Foreign Ministry confirmed Sunday that 11 Chinese were killed and two remain missing after their boats were attacked in the Mekong River four days ago.

Two cargo ships, the Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8, were attacked in the golden triangle area of the Mekong River on Oct. 5, the ministry said in a statement on its website.

Among the six Chinese on the Hua Ping, five were found dead and one was missing. Among the seven Chinese on the Yu Xing 8, six were killed and one was missing, according to the statement.

The ministry said it has asked Chinese embassy in Thailand and consulate general in Chiang Mai to investigate the incident immediately and spare no efforts to search for the missing.

It has also asked "relevant countries" to take effective measures to improve the protection of Chinese ships and sailors in the Mekong River, according to the statement.

The ministry said leaders of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council are paying close attention to the matter.

The ministry urged the "relevant countries" to immediately to look into the incident, determine the truth and bring the criminals to justice as soon as possible.

Chinese diplomats in Chiang Mai have arrived at the site to investigate. The Chinese embassy in Thailand is having close contact with the Thai side to get further information, according to the statement.

Any members with more information on this situation please post! Thanks!!

My guess would be pirates/drug smugglers. The Golden Triangle is infamous for being a trade route for illegal drugs.

There's a good chance that the Thai government won't be able to investigate the situation properly or possibly even at all because of the massive flooding hitting the capital and surrounding cities.

You really should post a warning because most of the images are rather graphic.

I found it highly shocking that a lot of the bodies have been tied and appears to have been hooded before they were killed. It was execution instead of merely robbery gone bad.

Considering many of the dead shown appeared to have been fished out of the river, I do not think there is a high chance that the missing crew members are alive. Looks more likely that their bodies just haven't been found yet.

It is also interesting that one of the dead was handcuffed.

I do not know the area all that well, but are many robberies that cold blooded in Thailand, or was this aggravated racially because the crews were Chinese?

Apart from applying all the diplomatic pressure it can, there is a not a great deal China can do about this despicable crime.

China would probably offer to send in their own police and forensics experts to help, but I doubt Thailand would accept as that will make them look bad.

China is still too weak in terms of foreign power. If this was citizens from uncle sam, the delta forces, navy seals, ranger, for god knows whom, all will be there with big guns in less than 5 hours.

Please don't use this tragedy as a soap box to use to start a pointless verses contest.

Besides, sending in the special forces would be a pointless knee-jerk reaction that I seriously doubt the US would do in a similar situation. Does the US send in the boyz when one of their citizens gets murdered by drug lords in Mexico?

Like the US does in Mexico, China will exert full diplomatic pressure to make sure local law enforcement spare no effort to try and apprehend the animals responsible for this horrific crime.

Talk of sending in special forces is frankly ridiculous and would be extremely counter-productive and unwise.

If 11 Americans were killed at once in Mexico, I wouldn't be quite so sure. I think China would only respond in such a way if they wanted to use the occasion as a sort of "stepping-out" for China's international power, announcing that if you mess with Chinese overseas, you will have a problem. I think China's leaders might decide to do such a thing one day, but not today.

a simple google search turns up about 200 Americans were killed in Mexico btw 2004-2009
that's average 40 a year. before the current round of drug wars.

Where are the green berets rangers deltas going into to mexico?

are you sure now?

facts people, facts!

----

p.s. there is plenty of DOJ, ATF, FBI, DEA US marshal etc people in mexico at the request and consent of mexican federales doing law enforcement work. I am not surprised chinese Ministry of public security and yunnan local police agencies has some team down stationed in these countries for anti-drug smuggler efforts. don;t turn a law enforcement matter into a needless war.

I don't know if Beijing is actively doing anything if this has been a continuing problem but if so I don't think they would advertise it. If anything it's all diplomatic talk. The rebels in Sudan have killed Chinese citizens and the Chinese have done nothing directly themselves. Or look at the pirates of Somalia. They're going to push Thailand to act. If China did anything it could be spun a hundred different ways against China.
