Ready to blackmail China for better trade deal.

I say, go ahead, do it.

I like to see how far Trump can go.

It would be interesting getting no concessions after getting rid of one-China Policy and the Pandora Box has opened.

China can deal with US rid of one-China Policy.

China should promote "All Men are created Equal and All countries are entitled to Nuclear weapons"
And that includes Japan

lol, Trump try to imitates Reagan's Plaza Accord. That's Navarro's call. He put that on his writings.
Using Taiwan card to force China to make concessions on trade like Japan did under Reagan.

This is Trump admin most logical move.

A trade war would hurt alot of US companies but Taiwan card is a Free Play for US. It doesn't affect US companies but at the expense of China.

China should say, Go Ahead. Do what you got to do.

Did you literally just make a freaking triple post...

Also, I feel like the subject of this thread (while immensely relevant to this forum's area of focus) has a very high risk of becoming a flame war.
I do feel like this should be discussed in some form even if people will butt heads, and I'd like the mods to maybe consider either clarifying where the lines are, and maybe revising the limits on political discussions for this specific topic with careful monitoring.

It means that if China offered to double imports from the US by 100% to $250 billion by 2018 and to $500 billion in 2020 (and droppeda HJ-10 on Fatty Kim in the bargain), Trump would send in the 101st Airborne to Taipei on a surprise visit to hand deliver a printed out Tweet to Tsai regarding the utmost urgency of turning "One China" in practice as well as talk.

I'm not bothered, but I am concerned the course of this thread will probably run into issues with the forum rules which tries to prevent serious political discussions, and this thread has the risk of getting quite toxic quite fast.

Nah, Trump recognizes Taiwan as an independent country and gain nothing out of it. The rest of world still won't recognize taiwan.

Trump will be viewed as a trouble maker.

After that , what happen? Trump will be all dressed up and got NOWHERE to go.

If China can be blackmailed this time, then it will be blackmailed again, and again.

The Taiwanese call and Trump's new narrative was not something that occurred at short notice where Tsai just happened to call Trump and congratulate him out of the blue like Trump suggested with his tweets, nor has Trump now suddenly thought of the idea all by himself.

It's down to months of deliberate lobbying effort by Taiwan, to take advantage of Trump's relative inexperience in foreign policy affairs. It produces no tangible benefits for the United States except to spite China and step on China's NO.1 core interest - the One China policy, the foundation of US-China relations. Also the fact that Bob Dole is now boasting about it runs counter to Trump's 'drain the swamp' narrative.

Having said that I wouldn't read too much into it just yet, unless it becomes official US foreign policy when Trump takes office.

The China of 2016 is no longer the China of 1996, and will have a plethora of tools to engage in a tit-for-tat retaliation.

There's so much potential benefit for China and the US to cooperate together in a win-win scenario. It's a shame recent US administrations have been dominated by people who have a containment/zero-sum game mentality - i.e. I don't care if we both lose as long as you lose more than me.

That's just my humble opinion - I hope this falls under the scope of 'reasonable political discussion' and will be allowed by the mods - I am interested to hear other points of view

Der Donald really doesn't have any fixed principles, apart from strongman fanboyism and a bizarre 19th century fixation on mercantilism.

He'll throw Tsai overboard the moment Xi offers him something good (Taipei will lose in a geopolitical bidding war 15 times out of ten).
