Interesting read, but I would stop short at calling it good.

It’s always amusing seeing western authors (having a Chinese name does not preclude one from having a thoroughly westernised mindset. Indeed, as with religion, it’s often the new converts who are the most zealous at loudly and publically embracing the established ‘correct’ way of thinking) doing mental gymnastics trying to explain China’s unprecedented economic success by steadfastly avoiding any serious considerations of the most import factor - it’s way of governance.
Exactly, we have seen the more aggressive missionary activities from SK, even crazy enough to go to the heartland of Taliban. :D

The "200 billion offer" was dubious to begin with - the Chinese government simply cannot afford to ignore the public opinion to make such an offer.

Such demand from Trump and the subquent suspicious offer is impossible, therefor has zero chance to be true.

Even if we just do a mental exercise, in it the Chinese government agrees to import the 200 billion thing, who in China is going to buy them? Surely not the government. The government is not going to eat all the extra pork or drink all the extra wine, can it? If the extra is cars, who is going to buy them? These extra cars will have to compete with cars from all over the world (having the same rate of tariff), if they could not win the heart in the past, who could guarantee they will?

What about China offers to buy up Qualcomm? Or buy 5000 Intel's top chips? Or 5 F-22 + 5 F-35 for study? That offer can easily go over 200 billions. Will Trump take that offer? If I were Liu He, I will put that offer on the table and watch Mnuchin's face to turn from red to green to blue.:D

Yeah, I was thinking when reading that TNI article, since when did any American (in this case an Asian minority) started praising the homogenous society? Wasn't America's strength derived from its diverse and multiracial cultures? Hahaha, cos Trump says so?

You have to remember the media like create the news besides reporting it. They love to "suggest" to others what action to take. Saying that China was going to reduce the trade deficit by $200 billion also serves to create anger when China doesn't do it. People are not going to get angry at the media for reporting lies but they'll blame China for backing out of a promise. It's like trap to force a direction to be taken.

I know you jest, but you have touched upon an interesting point - the only way the trade deficit could be significantly reduced is if America ends its market distorting ban on high tech exports to China.

What is never mentioned in the western media is that America bans the export of a lot of high tech equipment to China.

Were that to end, you would see a massive surge in Chinese imports of some key components and technologies.

It would not be surprising for a Chinese trade delegation to make this point, and say that an easy and painless way for America to achieve a $200bn trade deficit reduction would be to end such export restrictions and let the market work.

With a regular American administration, that would cut no ice, but with Trump and his lot, you never know if they might actually give that serious consideration. Or maybe it’s just more bare faced lies from Trump officials.

The trade negociations in washington betwen china and the US ended. There was a joint statement.

IMO, this sounds like a virtual capitulation by the US: no mention of tariff reduction, specific targets for trade deficit reduction, industrial policy.
The article mentions that they agreed to keep on talking, but it its advantageous to china, for the US and china to keep talking indefinitely.

The actual statement reproduced here:

"At the direction of President Donald J. Trump and President Xi
Jinping, on May 17 and 18, 2018, the United States and China engaged
in constructive consultations regarding trade in Washington, D.C. The
United States delegation included Secretary of the Treasury Steven T.
Mnuchin, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur L. Ross, and United States Trade
Representative Robert E. Lighthizer. The Chinese delegation was led by
State Council Vice Premier Liu He, Special Envoy of President Xi.

There was a consensus on taking effective measures to substantially
reduce the United States trade deficit in goods with China. To meet
the growing consumption needs of the Chinese people and the need for
high-quality economic development, China will significantly increase
purchases of United States goods and services. This will help support
growth and employment in the United States.

Both sides agreed on meaningful increases in United States agriculture
and energy exports. The United States will send a team to China to
work out the details.

The delegations also discussed expanding trade in manufactured goods
and services. There was consensus on the need to create favorable
conditions to increase trade in these areas.

Both sides attach paramount importance to intellectual property
protections, and agreed to strengthen cooperation. China will advance
relevant amendments to its laws and regulations in this area,
including the Patent Law.

Both sides agreed to encourage two-way investment and to strive to
create a fair, level playing field for competition.

Both sides agreed to continue to engage at high levels on these issues
and to seek to resolve their economic and trade concerns in a
proactive manner."

The US is still the world's No. 1 Economy, although it would eventually be overtaken by China. Trump will succumb to negotiating trade/tariffs with China. He is being pressured by problems of his own making and those of his supporters during the past year of his Presidency. Let's hope mutually beneficial negotiations would soon take place between the US & China; and eventually with the EU, Asean et. al. World Peace is at stake."The best kind of Victory is Victory won without fighting" Yang Xiong.
