I’m pretty sure the tariffs on Trump’s base is meant as a sort of peace gesture from Xi.

If Xi wanted to inflict maximum hurt, he’d strike as many innocent as possible to fan the flames of dissent against Trump. He’d strike across multiple sectors as well.

CPC has a lot of political analysts. They would also know that tariffs won’t change Trump voter base opinion and won’t cause dissent.

Beijing isn’t fighting for a killing blow but for a disarming blow. They want to check the US economy but let it remain standing so they can use it a market. Most of all they want to force open barriers to the American market.

My question right now is - Where is China going to get their oil now US threatens China (and multiple asian countries) with sanction if they purchase from Iran.
US is basically dictating to China how to behalf like a dog....or else it is the stick.

Because without the oil China's industry will grind to a halt. US is basically pulling another move to pressure China to a concession in trade talk. It is showing Chinese what it can do to China. UAE and the Saudis are US allies they do what US tell them so if China stopped buying oil from Iran guess what US will do next.... US will tell Saudi or UAE to stop selling oil to China or worse sell them at exorbitant price...

Is China going to obey to US command or is China going to risk it all?

depends on how secondary sanctions work

what if they barter?

i meanmaybe people wouldn’t be so protectionist in areas such as agriculture or nationalize oil if the world police didn’t go around and start sanctioning/invading everyone

You need to do investigation first before you open your mouth. China oil consumption is around 11 million barrel/day about 4 million barrel/day is produced domestically. so china import 7 million of barrel /day Out of Iran only make 6.5$ of import Right now the world is awash with oil and China can easily source it out from Africa or Russia, central Asia. Contrary to your post Saudi is not the biggest oil exporter to China But Angola is. this chart below isn't right

China’s Top Providers of Imported Crude Oil
Below are the top 15 countries that supplied 90.6% of the crude oil imported into China during 2018.

  1. Russia: US$37.9 billion (15.8% of China’s total imported crude)
  2. Saudi Arabia: $29.7 billion (12.4%)
  3. Angola: $24.9 billion (10.4%)
  4. Iraq: $22.4 billion (9.4%)
  5. Oman: $17.3 billion (7.2%)
  6. Brazil: $16.2 billion (6.8%)
  7. Iran: $15 billion (6.3%)
  8. Kuwait: $11.9 billion (5%)
  9. Venezuela: $7 billion (2.9%)
  10. United States: $6.8 billion (2.8%)
  11. United Arab Emirates: $6.7 billion (2.8%)
  12. Congo: $6.4 billion (2.7%)
  13. Colombia: $5 billion (2.1%)
  14. Malaysia: $4.8 billion (2%)
  15. Libya: $4.7 billion (2%)

The US can threaten with sanctions all they like. I doubt China or India will stop importing oil from Iran.

If US somehow totally embargoes Iranian oil the Iranians will just shutdown the Strait of Hormuz.
This is a naked US attempt to start a conflict with Iran. If they succeed it will cripple the world economy.
I doubt other countries will allow them to do it.

For example India has pretty good relations with Iran because they see it as a counter to Pakistan's influence in the region and as a source of less expensive oil. China has other oil suppliers but it's the principle of the thing. If they allow the US to shut down Iranian oil exports who is to say the US won't use the same power to block their oil imports next instead?

At the risk of getting banned, (my last post was imflamatory and country bashing).
I just would like to say the behaviour of unilatral sanctioning by a single country to anyone they like and then threatening any other countries that doesnt comply.
Where is the law based institution that the west, and its cheerleaderd keeps on about?
You could imagin the reactions and outcry from the "western law abiding institution" if the one doing the sanctioning and threatening is China!

Iran is not going to be trading oil in USD, if they trade it in yuan, or euro or any other currency, what is the US going to do about it? Also, US do not have the right of applying domestic law to international transactions. At most US can ban Chinese oil companies from using SWIFT or buy US crude, then they will just shoot themselve in the foot. The end of Petro dollar is the end of US dollar as a reserve currency.

If there's any takeaway from the current administration is that it plays dirty. You keep buying Iran oil aka not fall in line? I'll hit your semiconductor industry again. I'll slander your diaspora. I'll arrest some other high profile Chinese. The US can get away with these things without impunity.

Sure they can. But it will cost them big time as well. Part of the LNG industry in US and oil is dependent on Chinese procurement and contracts. If China says we will not buy it, then those Texans will be complaining to trump real fast.
