First Jet Squadrons from CVW-5 Relocate to Iwakuni this Fall

YOKOSUKA, Japan — The U.S. Navy announced Aug. 18 that the first jet squadrons from Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5_ will relocate to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni later this fall, the Navy said in an Aug. 18 release.

Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 115 and 195, along with Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 141 will relocate to Iwakuni at the conclusion of the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group’s (CSG) 5 fall patrol.

VFA-115, VFA-195 and VAQ 141 will join Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 125, which forward deployed to Iwakuni earlier this year. The relocation of all CVW-5 fixed-wing aircraft from Naval Air Facility Atsugi to Iwakuni is part of the Defense Policy Review Initiative, as directed in the May 1, 2006, Security Consultative Committee Document, also known as the U.S.-Japan Roadmap for Realignment. Naval Air Facility Atsugi will remain the home for all CVW-5 rotary-wing aircraft.

The timing of the squadron moves is contingent upon the completion of necessary squadron facilities at Iwakuni, some of which are still under construction. The phased relocation of the remaining CVW-5 fixed-wing squadrons will occur on a timeline agreed upon by the U.S. and Japanese governments.

Though CVW-5 fixed-wing squadrons will be based in Iwakuni, Naval Air Facility Atsugi will remain a vital base for the U.S.-Japan alliance and CVW-5 aircraft will occasionally use the installation as a divert field, or for training, refueling or maintenance.

Both VFA-115 and VFA-195 fly the F/A-18E Super Hornet, while VAQ-141 flies the EA-18G Growler, an airframe based on the F/A-18F Super Hornet equipped for electronic countermeasure missions.

CVW-5, the nation’s “911” air wing, is the U.S. Navy’s most advanced carrier air wing and is a critical combat strike element of Battle Force 7th Fleet, the only forward-deployed carrier strike group in the U.S. Navy. Deploying aboard USS RonaldReagan (CVN 76), the air wing contributes to peace and security in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

UPI said:
Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries has started advance construction work on the U.S. Navy's third Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier.

The company's Newport News Shipbuilding division kicked off the effort on Thursday with the ceremonial cutting of a 35-ton steel plate of the Enterprise, CVN 80, under an advance-fabrication contract awarded earlier in the year.

The Navy expects to make an award for the ship's detail design and construction next year.

"With this ship, we will 'boldly go where no one has gone before,'" Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin said in a news release. "She will be built using digital technology rather than traditional paper work packages and drawings. We will build more of this ship indoors, in new facilities so that our people have more opportunities to work under cover and out of the weather.

"CVN 80 will revolutionize how we build ships, just as her predecessor, CVN 65 -- the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier -- revolutionized our industry."

CVN 65 is the now-decommissioned USS Enterprise.

U.S. Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky participated in the steel-cutting ceremony.

Ford-class carriers, which will replace Nimitz-class vessels, feature new nuclear power plants, electromagnetic catapults, improved weapons movement and an enhanced flight-deck capabilities.

The second Ford-class carrier, John F. Kennedy, is currently under construction, with more than half of its structural units already erected, Newport News Shipbuilding said.

GREAT to see another USS Enterprise start building. I hope I live to see her launched and go on trials.

Last time AV-8B deployed on the LHD of the 7th Fleet now F-35B ;) ofc if the need is there others LHD have again AV-8B.

The Marines of Marine Attack Squadron 311 departed the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) Aug. 21, 2017, ending an era for the Marine Corps’ AV-8B Harrier community in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

VMA-311 is slated to be the final Harrier squadron to support the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from a forward-deployed station. VMA-311 is currently deployed to the Indo-Asia-Pacific under the unit deployment program, but will soon return to its home at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona.
