I think you mean Underway replenishment and RAS.. Answer.. nothing.

Underway replenishment at one time was abbreviated UNREP.. some years ago some genius changed that to "Replenishment at Sea".

Now the USN still has VERTREPs.. Vertical Replenishment. That is when helicopters are used. However many times VERTREPs and RAS are going on simultaneously....many, many times.

Well, the following was never highly reported. It happened in 1986, but because of the nature of the vessels involved, and the time frame, there was just not a lot of reporting about it.

Today I found a video of the entire incidient, which I thought I would never see.

It involved a US nculear powered ballistic missile submarine, the USS Gerorgia, SSBN 729 (which was later converted to a guided missile submarine, SSGN 729), and a US Navy harbor tug, the USS Secota YTM-415, that had met the Georgia and performed personnel transfer off of Midway Island where the Secota was based.

As the sub began to pull away, the tug was unable to back off properly (they believe it had a propulsion failure of some type) and ended up getting hung up on the subs stern plane, as you shall see. These Ohio Class, nuclear powered ballistic missile subs are big boats, displacing over 18,000 tons. The sub's stern plane damaged the tug severely, cutting into it and holing it below the waterline. When it finally did come away, it went down very fast.

This is the audio and video from the island of the sub. Very dramatic, and 100% what occurred. Two of the crew on the tug were lost.

The loss of the Secota, YM-415

Military service, even in peace time, is a very dangerous occupation.

God rest the souls of those sailors.
