But yet still dangerous and effective to any foe.

I don't think so !

If it would be the modernised H or F with their new radar and esp. the PL-12; YES ... but in this form it is nothing more - IMO more likely even less - than an old F-4 with still its original radar in use today.

Not necessarily. Even 'poor' countries have modern SAMs or manpads that can easily take down these old birds. Of course in reality I hope PLAAF would make sure AA defenses are neutralized before sending these in to do some mop up work.

Does anyone know how many J-7's are still active ? They are pumping out J-10's and Flankers at a pretty brisk pace.

27 Rgts with 28 : 756 with some others on 2000 fighters bombers only for AF ofc all retired in Navy.

Not replaced one by one by new fighters more expensives and far too much Rgts to provide

Well over a thousand J-7s and J-8s still in service.
Are you guys sure about those numbers ? Wasn't the PLAAF fighter fleet reduced to just 1300 fighters ? If you look at how many J-11, J-10A/B/C, JH-7 and Russian build Flankers there are in the fleet. Then the J-7's and J-8's in the PLAAF couldn't be more than just a few hundred.
