The benefit of building a Nuke-powered destroyer or crusier.

Being nuke powered is a deterent itself. Nobody wants to fire a missile and blow up a nuke powered boat, all the reactive material will spill all over the ocean and cause environment disaster.

Therefore it's beneficial to build more nuke powered destroyer and cruiser . opponents will hesitate to fire upon it.

And you would, if the enemy comes to your shores with nuclear powered boats?

Do you realize the reason why the US stopped building nuclear powered destroyers/cruisers? Because it is too expensive to run each and every year.

Running a big cost and show it to the heads of the CCP maybe a good way for a PLAN admiral to lose his job.

Nuke reactors don't blow up when hit by ASM, the designers will be smart enough to build a thick steal/lead tub around it to shield the radiation and to prevent it from suffering major/secondary damage. If it ship is hit enough with a missiles the ship will sink and so will the reactor with it, the radiation will be contained by the ocean.

And besides, someone has to do the nasty job of picking up that reactor from the bottom of the ocean, or sooner or later, you will be dining on mutant glow-in-the-dark sushi.

Watch this. If that's nuke powered boat, what would happen?

btw, recently Russia's Nuke powered missile cruiser, "Peter the Great" Went to South Africa and they refused to let the ship near their port, afraid of potential disaster from accident.

The nuclear reactor wouldn't explode, I can assure you that ask Popeye, he served in the USN and seen those reactor rooms they can take hits. ;)

Because the Russians have had a smattering of nuclear reactor incidents in recent memory on their nuclear ships?

Muahahahahaha, the advatages are straight forward. The ability to use high powered laser cannons and coil guns, both of which consume large amounts of electricity and are feasible in the next 20 years.

Correct. many safeguards are built in in case of attack. The nuke plant on USN CVNs & subs are very well protected.

Too bad. The Russian safety record reguarding nuclear power is not the best.

The USN CVN USS Theodore Roosevelt visited South Africa a few months ago. Read below;

In fact USN CVNs and subs make port calls the World over without fanfare about their nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power in the hands of persons that are properly trained to operate the systems is very safe.

The principle benefit is the ability to run for very long periods of time with no refueling, another is the speed you are able to attain with such a powerful plant, and finally, the ability to generate tremendous amounts of electricity (particularly with the newer generation engines) which power the shiop and its support systems and will power more and more exotic weapons as time goes on...ie. laser, electormagnetic rail guns, directed energy weapons, etc., etc.

But make no mistake, the largest benefit is still that first one.
