I think their best option would be to source submarines from South Korea. But I doubt that will be easy. I think sourcing them from Europe will cause a similar problem. The Japanese have highly capable submarines. I just wonder if they are not a bit overkill for Taiwan though. It is not like they need long range submarines. They would be better served by higher numbers of smaller submarines.
South Korea has been running pro PRC line of late. It's unlikely to get a deal.
7% economy growth,
That's there standard projected target the numbers are lower and even they have been disputed more of late.

However both The PRC opposition to Taiwan buying subs, claims of and deamnds for compliance with the mainland and projection of growth are boiler plate. It's like the sun rising in the East and setting in the West short of a true dramatic event it will remain a constant.

of course, why wouldn't they ? but what the Chinese can do ? :p but Taiwan would just wasting time and money, honestly ... really not much Taiwan can do .. reunification is the only way to go .. the longer it goes the less bargaining power Taiwan have ... better now while still have some bargaining power left

I'm not sure what incentive Taiwan has to unify with China. Hong Kong is showing that China's promises of autonomy aren't worth spit, because China expects HongKongese to conform with its principles. China wouldn't let the DPP exist in a unified China-Taiwan, so why would Taiwanese choose the false freedom of being able to vote KMT, KMT or KMT with a different haircut?

Anyway, I had a look at the front page of the thread, and the mods said no disucssion of independence/unification, so perhaps we should leave it there.

They weren't ever going to sell submarines to Taiwan. Doesn't matter if they're especially pro China or not, they don't want to annoy the country that's supporting North Korea.

Indeed. China objects to Taiwan scratching its nose.

Anyway, Taiwan is prepared to build submarines itself, even if foreign help is limited. It will take a long time and the first ones will no doubt have issues/flaws, but then again it waited about a decade to get P-3C Orions - I'm not sure time matters that much.

Depends on what subs they build.

Going for anything larger than a Type 209 is a gross waste of money.

Well steel is cheap - it's the internal components that are expensive. Although I agree that they don't need big boats. Circa 2,000t should be enough.
Building a couple dozen 800 ton coastal subs than 8 or so larger submarines is a much better investment (with improving Chinese ASW capabilities, it's best to disaggregate your underwater combat power).

Sure, but if you limit them too much you reduce capabilities and things like endurance. And say 36 small submarines could easily be a lot more expensive than 8 medium-sized ones. As I said, you need to remember the cost of the components, as well as the cost of training and paying the crews.
