Taiwan holds war games simulating Chinese island attack

Taiwan's military has practiced repelling a simulated Chinese assault on an outlying island group as part of annual military drills addressing the perceived threat from across the Taiwan Strait.

Units from the Army, Navy and Air Force were deployed for Thursday's drills on the Penghu islands. They featured tanks, rocket launchers, assault helicopters and soldiers using shoulder-fired missiles to repel a force invading from across the 100 mile-wide strait.

Warships maneuvered offshore and fighter jets deployed flares.

The drills come amid heightened tensions with China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory to be brought under its control by force if necessary.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen observed the drills wearing a helmet and flak jacket and said they would improve command and cooperation between the different branches of the military.

Wasting young lives to just to save a dying and inept regime and elitist over there.

I guest they're no longer doing any military exercises to "retake the Motherland".:D
Let's watch the anti-flavor of the posts.

The thread is about Tawain's military...not commentary on their nation.

I did engineering and program management consulting over there in Tawian (and other places in the far east) on maybe six or seven trips to Taiwan between 1996 and 2000. Most were maybe ten days but a couple were over a month long.

The people there are fine folks, and I was impressed with their engineering and program capabilities.

Made many good friends.

Which one can do in any of these nations if we will simply look at them as people, and families, and folks trying to do a job.

I have made friends in the PRC to...despite my own strong objections to their government.

Try and separate the two and we will not need to delete posts are warn people about getting too one sided in their posting...or about making blatant "anti" posts against the people themselves.

Just a word to the wise.

When I first heard about this plan, I thought it was a little crazy for Taiwan to build 20000ton+ LHD's, these ships seem a bit more reasonable.
Taiwan Province is better off building more submarines than LHDs or any large surface combatant. Those people have no chance to repel any real invasion, but they could make things more expensive for the Mainland, and maintain the illusion of deterrence for a few more years.
