Well,,, that's your opinion.

Have you ever worked wth the engineers and researchers in Taiwan?

I have. IN the mid to late 1990s.

They are smart people and know what they are about.

If they feel they need these upgraded vessels with more heavy air defense along with their powerful anti-surface weaponry, to go along with the numerous modern FACs (actual small missile boats) they have already built, then they have plenty of good reason to.

Whether you think they should or not.

...and I think the cost for twelve of them will end up being appreciably less than 2 billion US dollars.

Time will tell.

Given that the follow up batch of three will cost about $150 million a piece, lots 2 and 3 with the TC-2 are almost certainly unlikely to cost less than that.

Now, my point is, if they want a FAC squadron leader with some level of area air defense, a monohull would be a much more practical option (if nothing else, physics tells us that catamarans with a high center of gravity are a bad idea). And frankly, a 1,000-1,500 ton monohull probably is going to cost as much as a 700 ton catamaran.

Now, as to why anyone would want to build a 6,000-8,000 ton DDG with only 32 VLS for operations in the Taiwan Straits, I'm genuinely flummoxed on that one.

The qualitative and quantitative differences between the parties are too large
I would agree "there are countries which only a Minister of Foreign Defense can defend" (now I borrowed from my favorite story I already posted Apr 12, 2016
in later 1920s French Military Board arrived to then-Czechoslovakia to help plan its defense, and while standing around the map, the Chief of that Board said to Czechoslovak Generals something like Only a Minister of Foreign Affairs can defend your country (I think it was off record, but the story is completely believable, especially considering then-Czechoslovakia was gone about ten years after)

The situation of the Taiwan leaders if they were to loose their mind would be much worse than Czechoslovakia in 1938.
OT
In the late '20's there was only the enmity of Poland and Hungary as Germany hadn't stated to rearm seriously. So ten years later the situation had become steadily worse and you must ask what the British and French thought they were doing in Munich.

delft I think you're portraying the situation as if the Opfor could just poke at Taiwan and it would crumble (that's what Propagandists say when they're really unsure of the outcome :)

Agree
But the 4 DDGs Kidd are enough powerful ~ 90 missiles they have similar armament than 5 first Ticonderoga retired but not AEGIS a weakness in more in this area.
For Chaparal on La Fayette and SM-1MR on Knox Recovered from Gearing/Fletcher retired for AAW armament It's a little young :)
La Fayette classe et dérivés.png

La Fayette is only armed with it coz Chinese pressure others variants used by others countries get a decent AAW armament.

But Taiwan hve severals new types of missiles still Dangerous SAMs, LACM, anti-sips with long range and by ex. the new TK-III normaly in service now, replace Hawk is much more capable.
They have unusual SAM TK-II in land bases in VLS unique.

I think that is true. But acting to achieve regime change on Taiwan would produce diplomatic disadvantages elsewhere. It is much better to achieve a huge economic advantage by connecting China with all countries in Asia and Europe ASAP and let Taiwan rest. That way China shows itself to be a responsible member of the World community unlike one that looks for possibilities of regime change everywhere.

Is there a reason why the putative DDG has only 32 VLS?

On a 6,000-8,000 ton hull, you can easily put on 48-64 without breaking a sweat, and it's not like the Taiwan Straits is a low threat, low volume environment, especially from the air.

Ask their incompetence and corrupt leaders.;)
