What I Love about the US and the West. I love that it's actually democracy for all citizens. You have rights and liberties 99% of the time.(1% special circumstances). And it is about making thing better when your committed to making it happen. Almost zero censorship especially for entertainment American Mature Audience material beats everyone everywhere. American beer and spirits is my choice over the foreign brands.

Actually democracy and freedom are relative, like most things and stuffs in this world.

Its a cliche like saying you can be anything you want. Or that democracy is for everyone and everyone should adopt democracy, freedom, and universal suffrage.
To a certain extent it is true. But when governments and politics are involved, it is total pile of horse crap.

What i like about the West (not just US) is actually the same thing, freedom and being free. But on a person to person basis and social context. You don't need to be shy, modest, be aware of your position or practice any confucian wisdom to interact with other people. You speak out for yourself and other people will respect what you say, regardless if it's agreeable or acceptable for them.

Just be smart around your boss or employer ;)

I don't drink or smoke but in 1981 I was aboard the USS America in Perth AUS visiting. I made a quick friend ship with an Aussie cabbie. He said the greatest things about the US were;

1) Cigarettes
2) Liquor
3) Movies.

I love my country because of it's basic freedoms. Religion, freedom of speech, freedom of travel any where in the US you desire. I love the pure scope and size of the US. the various climates..We have tropical climates, we have 4 seasons ,we have deserts , we have coastal shore. You name it we have it.

We have a multi-ethnic population.

I love it.. I'm happy I live in a country, a Free Republic, that was founded by Godly men. Amen.

There are really very good things that I have learnt and appreciate from both the East (Asian) and the West. A few good examples: in Asia respect for elders, working damn hard to succeed, and the importance of education are of great importance; in the West the emphasis on democracy, freedom of speech and equal opportunity for advancement e.g. an African American is now the President of the USA, are really fantastic. Nothing too difficult if both the East & West are prepared to work towards amiable relationships and mutual respect, but without all the unecessary innuendos.

A very interesting thread.
Anyways my count of things:
  • art
  • mostly nice folks
  • nice folks who aren't always uptight and can take jokes
  • can take jokes and make fun of themselvess
  • can joke about race without being intentionally offensive and usually restrained in a playful manner
  • permit subcultures
  • rise of many controversial topics and ideas
  • democracy
  • multiculturalism
  • 9gag
  • jackass
  • food
  • appreciation of nature
  • appreciation of outgoing and outdoor lifestyle
  • bigger emphasis on freedom and lifestyle of seeing new things and experience them
  • morals, values, ethics
  • music
  • less rigid
  • awareness of racial issues and people who are different
  • liberals and conservative peoples make the headlines
  • concerns for social issues
  • free medical care in canada

anyways there's a lot, and i won't say just because i listed them here means they don't exist elsewhere. many things are very different from life in asia, which is good. differences promotes exchanges and learning, a very healthy thing. i'd say i'd come to appreciate the goods and recognize the bads of both sides. every place has its own story that's waiting for us to unearth and find out

I really love America, it is has a very diverse culture, meshed with many different backgrounds and heritages. It's openness and warmth makes it probably most progressive and dynamic places in the world, even when comparing to Europe. Sure you have backwater extremists and religious nuts, but overall a place I'm happy to call home.

I'm far more American than Chinese/Taiwanese...I been to Asia a few times (3x Taiwan, & 1x China) and its a totally different place. Everyone looks like you, but you know nothing about them and their social culture only the tidbits you pick up growing up in household but being ABC is radically different from being a native. One doesn't realize how American or Western one is until they go abroad.Still, it's hard not to feel alienated, when all the role models are white men in Hollywood, in the History books and even the Sciences...they teach a rather narrow curriculum, especially in Texas I had to go through 5 years of Texas history (that knowledge is useless).
