What is "CSAN-2 SAM" ?

Photographs have shown a Jiangwei forward six-barrel launcher firing a CSAN-2 SAM.

Is that an ASW Rocket? That can't possible be a Chinese copy of SA-N-2? @_@

My guess is that "CSAN-2" is "Chinese surface to air naval -2". Some kind of NATO designation. No idea which "HQ" designation it refers to.

I suspect it was a misspelling. On the keyboard, "s" and "a" are right next to eachother. The intended word might have been CSAN-2 SSM (Ship-to-Surface? Thats only one of the possible uses of SSM, but it makes sense). I remember reading a while back that the PLAN had equiped some Jianghu's with a beach-attack rocket, could be similar.

Alternately, the misspelling could have been SAM instead of ASM (Anti-Sub munition?). That fits more into the context, and I believe this is correct.

I'm not suggesting either, just throwing it out there.

or the stone-aged version of HQ-61 was Chinese Surface to Air Missile Naval - 1
And the sixbarreled version of HQ-61 (as we all regocnise its promident profile among Jiangwei's siluet ) is CSA-N-2
I have came cross of CSS-N-4 as a designation to YJ-8 so Roger's guess is most likely the correct one. But what did you mean by "No idea which 'HQ' designation it refers to"??

And to you others, didn't the six-barreled launcher ringed any bell...?


I mean, everyone knows that this old corvette desing features in its first ships this huge and well recgnizable six-barreled launcher for HQ-61 SAM, wich we all know also that was the seccond SAM system that Chinese ships brougth to sea....
