Valiant Shield 2006 Excercise Pictures

In old days, you would link pictures directly from US Navy sites... the big and large pictures would distort the page, take FOREVER to load and sometimes never load. Cause other issues with browser freezing up and useless frustration.

Nice pics..Most are from navy.mil. They have the best pics of any DoD site..

I wonder what the Chinese observers thought of the operations? Espically on an CVN. It's one thing to look at video and pictures. And a completly different experience to witness it in person... I'm sure the USN, USMC & USAF put on a great show.

Knowing how some people are on the US team. The US team was saying this to the observers without uttering a word.."This is what we will let you see. This is just a show. Just the tip of the spear. Do you really want to tangle with us???

Maj. Gen Chip Utterback, USAF Deputy Commander, Joint Task Force 519 gives the thumbs up to Rear Adm. Zhang Leiyu from the People’s Republic of China to press a remote detonator of ordnance that was placed within Apra Harbor as a demonstration performed by Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Five. This demonstration was part of a static display for dignitaries from Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and Singapore after they toured Naval Base Guam. The group also observed demonstrations by Navy Special Warfare Unit Two and Mobile Security Squadron Seven during their tour. The thirty three foreign dignitaries are currently here to observe the U.S. Pacific Command exercise Valiant Shield 2006 which involves approximately 22,000 Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Soldiers and Coast Guardsmen, one of the largest joint-military exercises in the Pacific in more than a decade. As I told the MSNBC producer in an email conversation:

Invitation is intended to highlight two things to China:

1. Show of force to China as a means of deterrance for Taiwan: Show what United States has in store as far as military strength is concerned for China in its Pacific fleet. It also allows china to observe how United States military works and may use the information obtained from these observation to further enhance its own military capability and intelligence.

2. Build closer military ties so that political leadership finds it easier to build confidence and work on potential problems such as Taiwan issue, human rights accusations, etc.

Also, it could be that US is hoping that China would also invite United States to one of its military excercises and observe latest frigates, submarines and other weapons that China is developing and has inducted into its armed forces (China has also invited US in 2003 and 2005 to observe its military excercises in the past). [deleted] and really depends on the political front that is to follow the guam excercise and how much confidence both of the countries build.

It's getting significant play on Xinhua's Chinese site too

Several pages follow this one, all in Chinese for anyone who reads it.

All good to see - such observation of each other's exercises by NATO and Warsaw Pact in late 1980s helped to lower tensions and increase understanding in Europe.
