I found this article while reading the San Diego Union-Tribune. So I did a Yahoo search to get more sources and I did!!:)

Well this could be great news. I wonder what sort of military exchanges could they be refering to? Anyone have any ideas? Maybe some "Wargames" in the future? What ever it is I pray it leads to a peaceful co-existance between the two great nations.

U.S., Chinese defense officials discuss military exchanges

2005-12-10 02:42:26 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BEIJING, Dec. 10(AP) -- Senior American and Chinese defense officials have concluded two days of talks in Beijing on enhancing military cooperation, Chinese media said Saturday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said U.S. Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Richard Lawless and Zhang Bangdong, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Ministry of Defense, discussed military exchange programs set for 2006 and maritime military security in talks that ended Friday.

The U.S. Embassy did not comment on the report.

Rumsfeld held talks with senior Chinese defense officials in Beijing in October.

Xinhua quoted Xiong Guangkai, chief of China's General Staff, as praising the Rumsfeld visits and other contacts between Chinese and American military officers, when he spoke on Friday.

"All of these activities have played an active role in strengthening mutual understanding and closing relations between the sides," Xiong reportedly said.

this is good progress, although a peaceful coeexistance can never occur. like with schools on the outside, students can be great friends. but they must always be competitive.

americas strategic goal from this: get more info on china;s new military equipment

china's: check out how its new gear performs against american gear.

Why do you say that? What prohibits the US and China from coexisting peacefully? It is not inconcievable to envision the US and China becoming allies over this new century and both helping to promote peace and prosperity throughout our world.

it may be true that peace can be achieved but i think it will that a very long time. since Mao Ze Dong created the poeples republic of China, China has mainy very anti western. the two countries haven't had a good history with eachother. also with the US backing Taiwan it will be hard to maintain peace if Taiwan declares indepence.

I can't help but think that the Americans are getting the loosing end of this. I won't be surprised that Americans will start complaining about pla being too restrictive in a few years. Maybe not the best idea in terms of national security, but I think some of the concerns of pentagon would be lessened if China allow America access to some of China's new but non-strategic weapons.

I would say relations between US and PRC have improved alot during the past few years. dont forget about the Nixon-Mao meeting. Nixon is considered one of the US presidents that many Chinese people like. As Mao23 said taiwan is also an allie of America and we know that taiwan isnt too friendly with the PRC. Therefor, US becoming allies with china will ruin US-Taiwan relations which is part of the reason why America is not working to hard on improving US-PRC relations. second just why would there be anti westerns because Mao created the PRC? that makes no sense at all.

US and China can get along just fine!! If these two countries are at peace, the whole world benefits.

Clinton and Jiang seem to genuinely like each other :)

Only Bush and the neo-cons are stubbornly anti-china

The truth is that US has to learn to manage China's rise like EU is doing instead of using Japan to try to contain China.

I don't think Pres Bush is anti China. BUT there are members of his administration that are. And they all are fearfull of the PRC. Even though the PRC has never in it's long history been a conquering nation.

Neo-cons..Those fellows are fear and hate mongers. You should read the anit-China and scare articles they post in that right wing rag the Washington Times. They manange to twist a lot of stories around and add conjecture in stead of facts.

Initially Mao and the CPC weren't anti western and had hoped for western/usa cooperation, however the Americans screwed up and backed the wrong side in the Chinese Civil war when they should've stayed neutral, then there was Trumans neutralizing the Taiwan straights in the Korean War, the intervention in Korea when any moron can tell the Chinese would intervene, MacArthurs meglomania reaaaaaally didnt help matters, the 2 decades of hostility before Nixons 1 China Policy.... etc.

Actually, Mao was anti-Western all along. Ever since he was a child, he swore to save the Chinese people from the influence of the Western Imperialist. The Korean war have nothing to do with his personal believe. It just made him toughen his anti-Western policy.
