These kinds of threads tend to get derailed real quick. Maybe could have gone to the Members forum section so that there is more tolerance for wider discussion

Biden makes diplomatic concession to Russia with Nato talks plan
US president wants allies to discuss Moscow’s ‘concerns’ in attempt to prevent invasion of Ukraine
Joe Biden has made a significant diplomatic concession to Moscow designed to prevent an invasion of Ukraine by signalling he wants to convene meetings between Nato allies and Russia to discuss Vladimir Putin’s grievances with the transatlantic security pact.
the US president said he hoped to announce by Friday high-level talks “to discuss the future of Russia’s concerns relative to Nato writ large”. The talks would explore “whether or not we can work out any accommodation as it relates to bringing down the temperature along the eastern front”, Biden added.
The US president said he hoped the participants would include not just Washington and Moscow but also “at least four of our major Nato allies”, although he declined to name the specific countries. Moscow wants Nato to commit to halting any eastward expansion and to refrain from deploying troops and equipment that could be used to attack Russia from neighbouring countries.
But Biden’s reference to finding a potential “accommodation” with Moscow in eastern Europe will startle many eastern Nato members and US allies, who fear Putin is using the threat of military force to win concessions on the US security presence in Europe.

Russia made an official protest against NATO's provocation. It is calling for talks but it follows up with a statement that it would deploy all means possible to remove emergent threats.

@texx1 bro I hope the West listen, the Russian won't withered from a threat and like the Chinese won't be Bluff. A more realistic approach is needed, BUT with Washington being staff with Neocons, this Ukraine and Belarussian project will continue as a way to poke the Russian as their goal is to have a Yeltsin type President to exploit and extract its resources.

With the midterm coming up next year and democrats' abysmal performance in governor races, Biden couldn't really afford to look weak when confronting Russia so I am not optimistic.

@texx1 bro the Neocons had bipartisan support, it's part of the deep state, its ideology had permeated throughout the bureaucracy. I think it will take a generation maybe 2030 before the American change course. It will quicken if they suffered a disastrous defeat in Ukraine and Taiwan. A sign of panic is happening inside the American political scene, as a Senator threaten a nuclear strike on Russian, such statement show a sign of desperation as the American bluff is not being taken seriously, a serious blow to its prestige.

Can someone summarize the situation? I haven't been following, why are there talks of Russia invading Ukraine now?

It started with Collapse of Soviet Union and subsequent NATO slow expansion towards Russian border, absorbing the former Soviet and Warsaw pact states over the past three decades. Russia was too poor and weak to do anything about it.

Ukraine was seeking entry into EU until an pro-Russian president sabotage the process which led to the pro-EU Euromaiden movement and US-backed 2014 Revolution that overthrow the pro-Russian govt. This pushed the president to flee to Moscow in exile and new Ukraine govt wants to join EU and form closer ties with West and away from Russia.

Russia responded to this by annexing Crimea as historical irredenticism and instigate trouble in eastern Ukraine with Russian population in retaliation for Ukraine's closer ties to West.

Obviously Ukraine is scared shitless and wants entry into NATO after losing territory to Russia. NATO wants to continue the trend of expanding border all the way to Russia, is entertaining the Ukraine membership.

In response, Putin is massing troops on Ukraine to threaten Ukraine and West to not allow Ukraine entry into NATO. And NATO wants to expand to Russian border. So that's why there is talk of war. Putin says the "redline" is no Ukraine membership, while Biden says he rejects redline pushed by Putin. Biden is non-committal to committing troops to defend Ukraine possibly as deference to Putin but promised strong sanctions.

I was referring to recent events. Is Ukraine about to join NATO or something?
