Edit: Seems the force involved including Kaga, 1 Akizuki, and 1 Atago.
lol, they probably wanted to gather some intel during MSDF exercise and went from hunter to hunted pretty fast. We only know about that as the sub violated the international laws and I wonder how often it happens on both sides that training goes 'live' after detecting a submarine.

What international law? From the news it sailed in the contiguous zone which is free for anyone to navigating. Also any info on this japanese exercise?

Btw, if you have further info, not jumping to an emotional conclusion would help.

No idea what was the aim of the exercise but knowing that there was an AEGIS equipped destroyer, an ant aircraft and ASW competent destroyer plus an aircraft carrier (not yet per se, but will be next year) I think that an answer is pretty easy - it's an aircraft carrier with escorts. And I've known that Kaga was in the area as it visited Kagoshima recently. Her homeport is Kure. It's not like she's around Okinawa 24/7/365. It seems like there's a clear coincidence between training and Chinese (supposedly?) submarine. I'm only baffled that submarine's CO deiced to take the passage he did and risked becoming famous with all of the newspapers in the region writing about him instead of going a few miles south which would save him from this 'privilage'.

By UNCLOS anyone is free to sail in the 12-24 nautical miles contiguous zone which is where this submarine sailed. So I have to ask again: what international law does it violated?
Read it at least...
Article20
Submarines and other underwater vehicles

In the territorial sea, submarines and other underwater vehicles are required to navigate on the surface and to show their flag.
